UNDERSTANDING - If You Do Not Understand Others, Then Ask For Clarificat...

Over time you are going to hear the messages, visions, missions, and challenges especially from other leaders. Sometimes those leaders are not going to deliver a clear, well-thought out, or articulated message.

Folks, if you do not understand what someone is sharing with you, rest assured, there are others that do not understand as well. Do not wait...ASK! Ask for clarification, ask for a deeper explanation. Do not hesitate and wait for a better time as there will never be a better time than right now. DO IT!

There is a place and time for everything and everyone. Sometimes your message may be arriving too late or too early. No matter when it arrives do not be discouraged as for many it may be arriving just in time.

Focus on constantly and consistently delivering your message it will land on the lap of those that need it right now and it will land on a stack of pending items for those that will need it later.

What about those that it arrives too late? Catch you on the flip side and there will be a flip side, there always is!

Continuing with others refusing to understand you and your message. Another possibility is that what you are bringing them is NOT the message they want to hear.

Your clear and concise message may be part of something that others do not want anything to do.
Do not be offended, as a leader you are expected to NOT be all things to all people.

UNDERSTANDING - People Will Only Understand What They Want To Understand...

People only want to understand only what they want to understand and do not for one second believe otherwise. Sure some people will understand but what about those that refuse to understand?

They will only see what their narrow-minded vision of what you offer will allow. No need to worry. Know that is an acceptable hurdle. Sometimes that hurdle you might want to avoid. Have you ever notice in life people will put into their mission, vision, challenge an obstacle they know many will not be able to overcome. They do that to thin out the herd, to only get those that know they can overcome the obstacle on board.

Whether it is consciously or unconsciously done on both sides it is part of human nature. Some people will gravitate towards you message, vision, mission, or challenge while others might not know how to tactfully and graciously bow out. Instead they take the low road and burn bridges.

Accept that not everyone will like or are fully capable of fully understanding what you are sharing. That's on them.

Remember, Actions over Words all day, every day!

UNDERSTANDING - Make Certain You Know & Understand Your Message - 30 Aug...

When it comes time to share your message, no matter what it is, there is one thing to remember. Before you go out among those that you want to lead, you have to make absolutely certain that you know your message. it is imperative that you not only fully know and understand your message but that you clearly and comprehensibly articulate your message to others.

By clearly and comprehensibly articulating your message to others means that you do know & understand your message. Nothing makes a leader a leader than one who can deliver their vision with enough knowledge, understanding, and passion so as to inspire others to act.

Now, do not for one second think you got this because you DON'T got this. I know for a fact I do not have this and that is why I have to constantly work on it and you do too. Knowing and Understanding your message is a full time job. Time to get busy.

DO NOT GIVE UP: When You Do Not Live Up To Expectation of Others - 27 Au...

Aside from blaming you for their inadequacies people will also be quick to let you know when you are not living up their expectations of you. Do not give up when others bring that nonsense to you. As you are progressing on your own journey and blazing your own trail on the way to developing your self-leadership and growing as a leader, you will start to shift in your view of the world and others. It is at this point that you will become a target for those that you are leaving behind. Well, technically they are leaving themselves behind when they refuse to grow both personally and professionally. Most of the time they would rather deflect than to admit to themselves they cannot even meet their own expectations. Remember, Actions over Words all day, every day! Get to work,

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Blame You For Their Problems - 26 August 2021

As I have mentioned there are people that will not like you. There will be nothing you can do about that. Accept that fact and life becomes better.

However, there is another deeper side to others NOT liking you. There are people out there that will blame you for their problems. There are people that for no reason than their own ignorance will find a way to blame you for their problems.

People will go out of their way to blame you for their problems. Whatever the problem they are refusing to accept responsibility for their actions and inactions. They refuse to hold themselves accountable but are quick to hold others accountable and swift to lay blame.

You cannot give up when it comes to dealing with that kind of behavior. As a leader, get used to this becoming a standard and not an exception. It is when you set the example of holding yourself accountable and holding those that need to be held accountable accountable that you begin to change yourself, how others see you, interact with you and ultimately, they will change themselves.

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Drink The Poison & Expect You To Die - 25 Au...

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Drink The Poison & Expect You To Die

There are all kinds of human beings out there. Some will like you, some will despise you and others do not give a damn about you. Then there are some that might not even know and already they do not like you. That's fine, leaders you know you are not here to please everyone all the time.

Thus, it is only a matter of time when you will encounter someone, for a reason known only to them that they will not want you to be a part of their lives and will do what it takes (short of committing a felony) to keep you out. Let them be. Don't go stirring the hornet's nest in a vain attempt to find out why they want you gone so bad.

Sometimes people do not need a reason to do the things they do.

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Only Care About Themselves - 24 August 2021

When it comes to people caring about themselves there are four kinds of people in the world:
#1 Those that care only about themselves and screw everyone else. That is pretty self explanatory.
#2 Those that do not care about themselves and expect no one to do the same.
#3 Those that will never care about themselves but go out of their way to care about others.
#4 Those that care about themselves to ensure that they can continue to care about others.

Personally, I like the fourth type of person. That individual recognizes that in order for them to be a successful leader they have to take care of themselves in order to continue to be in a position to take care of others. This leader is one that almost always leads by example. They show their followers that they must take care of themselves first in order to be good enough to take care of and lead others.

DO NOT GIVE UP: When People Live In The Past - 23 August 2021

DO NOT GIVE UP: When People Live In The Past

Getting back to the concept of you become just like the people you hang out with. If those people like to live in the past, abhor the future and want things to remain the same. Then you have found yourself living in the past. We know it is not that easy and yet it happens.

It happens a lot especially, we find ourselves around individuals that would rather keep things they way they are no matter how much progress has been made. You have every right to remove yourself people that are going nowhere. The longer you stick around such people the harder it will be for you to grow (personally and professionally).

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Do Not Believe In Themselves - 20 August 2021

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Do Not Believe In Themselves

As you grow to become better than you were yesterday, you will encounter individual(s) that will not believe in you.

Usually, they do not believe in you because they do not believe in themselves. They have developed such a level of defeat within themselves that they refuse to see that others can succeed. They refuse that they too can succeed but they have not the mindset, aptitude or wherewithal to attempt to grow into something greater than mediocrity.

Sucks that far too many people would prefer mediocrity over doing what it takes to grow above and beyond what they have known for far too long in their lives. For whatever reason, those individuals that do not admit that they do not believe in themselves would rather deflect towards others and make up some nonsensical reason not to believe in someone else's success.

So, if you find yourself surrounded by people that appear to not believe in you, your success, and willingness to grow do not fret, as it usually something they lack in themselves. Their lack of belief in themselves is what they use to blind themselves from their own truth and shortcomings rather than to be happy and support those that are trying to be better than they were yesterday.

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Have Zero Discipline - 19 AUGUST 2021

DO NOT GIVE UP: When Others Have Zero Discipline

There will be times that you will encounter individuals that talk a good game but fail to deliver.

Those individuals are ALL SHOW AND NO GO!

They are all show and no go because they have absolutely ZERO DISCIPLINE. They lack what it takes to make things happen.

Should you find yourself among individuals that are lacking the DISCIPLINE to deliver on what they say, go running. Run to the hills. Run Fast and Run Far. Put distance between you and those that refuse to put in the work (in the form of discipline) to get what they say they want are not the kind of people you want to be near.

Put putting geography between you and those with ZERO discipline ensure that their dullness does not rubs off on you.

DO NOT GIVE UP: What Other People Think - 18 August 2021

People will always have something to say. People will always have an opinion about this and that. They will think about you and what you do, what you say, what you failed to do or say. That's just how people are. Heck, you probably do it too. No matter what, you have to know that what others think about when it comes to you does not matter. Most people will think they know you or what is best for you when in all actuality, they do not know what is best for themselves let alone think they know anything about anyone. PRIORITIZING and the Eisenhower Matrix - 16 AUGUST 2021

As I have been talking about doing what it takes to minimize distractions, tracking your time, ultimately it involves creating and setting priorities. Learning to prioritize, means you are on track to creating order where there is no order. Prioritizing is a necessary part of learning to lead yourself. If you are not sure on how to proceed with creating and setting priorities, I recommend using the Eisenhower Matrix. The four quadrant Eisenhower Matrix is to be used to help you determine what is: - URGENT & IMPORTANT - IMPORTANT BUT NOT URGENT - URGENT BUT NOT IMPORTANT - NOR URGENT & NOT IMPORTANT It is a simple yet effective prioritizing tool and it can easily be mastered and helps move to more complex prioritizing tools. TRACK YOUR TIME - 13 August 2021

As our lives become more and more busy and time consuming that along with other distractions we can lose track of time. In order to understand where has the time gone and how to reel in back in we find out what and where that ime is going. By tracking how you spend your time, you will find yourself identifying how you spend your time as well as when and where the distractions are coming from. Those distractions will most certainly eat away at our day. We must identify the cause of the distraction or lack of focus. As we start to track our time, we begin to see trends and identify patterns of behavior, your behavior, that are leading towards losing track of time and ultimately losing focus when in turn leads to not getting things done. As you move on your journey of self-leadership you will discover that the sooner you spot the cause of the distraction, the sooner you can deal with the distractions and ultimately, come out on top. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS - 11 August 2021

Distractions are all around us. Distractions are part of the background. Distractions are here to stay. Distractions are here to shift our focus from what is important, what is relevant to the irrelevant. HEY! Look at that shiny object. Self-Leaders must learn to deal with those distractions either by cutting through them, going over, under or around them. No matter what you do, working with the distractions cannot be done. That is worse that multi-tasking. You must do what you can to keep those distractions at bay. PLAN TO WIN - 10 August 2021

WHEN IT COMES TO ANY KIND OF BATTLE, KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER WITHIN YOU TO DO WHAT MUST BE DONE: WIN
Whenever lines are drawn, sides are chosen, and stands are final, know that you have entered into combat. Whether it is for country, property, love, or whatever trivial matter that puts you on that battlefield. Know that both sides approach that battlefield with the intention of achieving only ONE outcome and that is to WIN.
When you find yourself on the battlefield know that those that stand opposite you are SOLELY there to BEAT YOU, to DEFEAT YOU, to MAKE YOU LOSE. They are there to show you that you are not worthy.
When you step on the field of battle YOU had better be prepared to stand up, defend yourself, take the fight to them or find yourself lacking. If you find yourself incapable of defeating your opponent, why bother? Know the time has come for you to throw yourself on the ground, curl up in the fetal position and beg for mercy.
Mercy you know they will not give you, mercy you do NOT deserve. They want to win and they will do what it takes, including showing you NO mercy.
Please know there is NO SUCH THING AS A FAIR FIGHT, because in any fight there can only be ONE WINNER!

PLAN FOR SUCCESS - 4 August 2021

When it comes working on our focus or our success or whatever we must work on to succeed, there is one thing that must be done: PLAN. Planning is a CRITICAL component to SUCCESS. As the ever popular and TRUTHFUL old adage goes, “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Thus, when you plan to succeed, you succeed. However, when creating that plan there is one thing to remember: Adjust for all things including DISTRACTIONS. While all plans cannot be all encompassing, there is no reason to exclude distractions and how you plan to deal with them, when they arrive. When it comes to distractions it is NOT a matter of if you will be distracted but when! Get to work. FOCUS - 02 August 2021

August 2 - FOCUS As recent athletic competition has shown, when a team or its “leaders” lose FOCUS or tries to shift focus away from what is important, at that moment. In this case, what was important is winning a game. The team that was shifting focus or multitasking comes up short because at most that anyone that is multitasking or shifting focus can give to any particular item or task is 80% of the attention. While the other team or competition is solely focusing on the task at hand and paying no attention to the non-game related content until after the event is CHOOSING to give 100% 100% versus 80% tell me who wins? That’s right the team or group giving 100%. Pay attention, Give 100%, Stay Focused! REMEMBER: ACTION is ALWAYS greater than WORDS Get to work, David Guerra, MBA author of THE WALKING LEADER

As you work on moving forward and away from what you have done wrong to yourself. Know that any future change begins and ends with you. What you are going to tolerate and what you will allow to trample all over you is based on what you allow. To make REAL, LASTING change in your life you have to work on what you can change. Typically, this kind of change is working on yourself. Real work and not self-serving proclamations. Remember YOUR words have NO VALUE unless you act. Take Time For Yourself - 27 July 2021

July 27 - TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF As part of growing, learning, self-motivation, developing your self-respect is ensuring that you periodically take some time for yourself. This is not the “me time” for a mani-pedi or to see how many margaritas you can throw back in an hour then sleep half of the next day away. That is NOT taking time for yourself,, that is cheating yourself. Take the time for yourself and use it to rest, relax, recover, recuperate, reflect, refine and re-adjust your course. We all get off course but with taking the time to work on getting back on course then and only then are we growing because we are getting to know true inner self and not that jumbo-jumbo we tell people when we say things like “you don’t know me” or “you don’t decide for me” and while the answer may be TRUE, have you truthfully (without pulling any punches) ever asked and answered those questions about yourself? Probably not. That’s OK most people never do because they would rather put up a front than to go boldly forward in life without having to prove anything to anyone. So make the time and get to know yourself. I mean really get to know who you are, who you become and what makes you tick and why! HOW OTHERS RESPECT YOU (IF THEY CAN) - 26 July 2021

COLD, HARD TRUTH ALERT: YOU CANNOT CONTROL HOW OTHERS RESPECT YOU!

How you respect YOURSELF first will feed into how others will respect you. They will test your boundaries and if you cave, they will exploit your lack of SELF-RESPECT and thus THEY WILL NOT give you an ounce of respect.

Personally, there have been so many people that I have allowed in my life to disrespect me. Many of them were family members, some were complete strangers and others have been “friends”. It was not until I stepped up and took charge of my SELF-RESPECT that they were given their walking papers and they were gone. Seriously, no one needs all that negativity and toxicity in their lives.

Another cold hard truth is that I used taking charge of my SELF-RESPECT as a catalyst for CHANGE in my life and you can too.

Learn to identify those toxic individuals that “demand” your respect. Those are usually the ones that the least need or want for your respect but they like “flexing” their perceived power. The ones demanding your respect are more than not hiding something. They want to keep you silent because you are “supposed to” respect these people because of their place in the family structure, workplace hierarchy, or because they have something that others perceive as worthy of respect such as money, power, status, or whatever others deem worthy.

Be better than that and them by respecting yourself first!

Set your boundaries and standards, then those that are “demanding” your respect will see you as not giving it to them until they respect you.
this is not a quid pro quo situation but when someone demands something what is being given in return? Where is the reciprocity when it comes to respect?

However, those individuals will, more than likely, not waste their “precious” time giving you any sense or level of respect first. So off they go to find another individual with little to no Self-Respect / no Self-esteem.

As a leader, it is your mission to encourage others to grow their self-respect and not fall to their knees in submission when someone comes around DEMANDING RESPECT. It does not matter who that individual is and where they are in your life because RESPECT HAS TO BE GIVEN LONG BEFORE IT CAN BE DEMANDED.

SELF-RESPECT - 23 JULY 2021

Question: Who DESERVES the most RESPECT in YOUR LIFE? Answer: YOU! You do. You deserve the most respect. However, earning that respect begins with you. Yes, You! You have to have SELF-RESPECT long before you can respect others and most definitely long before others will even think about respecting you. I cannot stress this enough: YOU MUST ALWAYS RESPECT YOURSELF. If you want to succeed in life you must succeed in SELF-RESPECT. By setting and sticking to the standards and boundaries you set for yourself, you will find yourself in a better position to push yourself further and higher. All the while, it will make it easier to identify individuals that offer you no respect or used you to their advantage because they could clearly see you had no respect for yourself. About Respecting Others - 22 JULY 2021

As I mentioned, RESPECT is a TWO-WAY street. You Get It and You Give It. However, as a leader you have to take the initiative and be the first one to give that respect to others.

However, make it perfectly and clearly known to you that you can and must withdraw that respect when you are no longer being respected or disrespected.

You CANNOT sacrifice your own self-respect because you are “supposed” respect someone when they do not deserve your respect or are abusing that respect because of the position they hold in the family hierarchy or on the company’s corporate ladder.

ABOUT RESPECT - 21 July 2021

Defined as "a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements" RESPECT is above all else a TWO-WAY street. You Get It and You Give It. Just as quickly as you give it, you can take it back. You can stop respecting someone after a lifetime of respect. RESPECT is a fickle being and is something not to be taken lightly.
This week we will talk about the different aspects of RESPECT and what we can and cannot do about it. However, there is something to think about: When we are told that we are "supposed to" respect someone or something, are we truly and freely giving that respect?
In that case, that thing we give is commonly known as PLATITUDES.
Question everything especially those things and individuals that "demand" to be respected. REMEMBER: ACTION is ALWAYS greater than WORDS

YOU DO HAVE CONTROL ON HOW OTHERS HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE - 19 Jul 21

YOU DO HAVE CONTROL ON HOW OTHERS HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE

As the main topic has been ACCOUNTABILITY, HOW TO HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE, HOLDING OTHERS ACCOUNTABLE but there is another side to that coin. OTHERS WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE & YOU WILL HAVE VERY LITTLE TO NO CONTROL OVER HOW OR WHY THEY DO SO.

Knowing that you cannot change people (their behavior) you can change people (move them out of your life) because of their negativity, how they choose to treat you, or whatever the reason. What that reason may be, you have the ability to control that aspect of any relationship.

If it is not working out then YES, you can make that change. While you can try to motivate them, inspiring them but you cannot dictate to them because they ARE holding you to a standard that they have not shared with you.

People will hold you accountable for an action or words spoken that you have absolutely NO CLUE (BECAUSE WE DO NOT READ MINDS) what that standard or expectation may be. Yet, they will hold you to and then blame you for not meeting their expectations or standard. How is that fair? It is not fair.

Therefore, you can change people. Remember, you are only as good as you tolerate. Stop tolerating their negative behavior and they will soon find someone else who will ignorantly accept that kind of behavior in their lives. Stop feeding the negative and soon they will go find someone else to feed off of and drain them of their positive energy.

Current and Future Leaders, it is your responsibility to make things right in your life first. If others do not like it, well that's on them. You can only control yourself, your actions, your words, and what you are willing to tolerate from others especially when they do NOT want to be held accountable but have absolutely no problem holding you to the perverted sense of what is accountability and what they expect of you all the while never communicating that expectation or standard.

Time to cast away the lines that have been holding you down and GOOD RIDDANCE!

Bias - Thursday- July 15, 2021

Today, I am talking about BIAS.

Everyone has bias. Every single person on this planet has bias towards or against something or someone. If you say you do not then I am calling you a damn liar! Seriously, we all do. However, to become the leader we always wanted to follow, we must learn to control that bias.

Current and Future Leaders, we must work long and hard to ensure that they can make decisions that impact individuals and/or the entire team without letting the biases creep in. To be a fair, equitable, just and authentic leader you must control those biases and not let them influence your decision making.

It may be difficult to do so at first, but those leaders that care about others before they care about what  is in it for themselves will see minimizing the bias as what must be done.

Sadly, those individuals that would rather half-ass their way towards a "position of power" will see minimizing the bias as an option. An option they would rather not utilize.

Thus taking the high road means controlling and curtailing your bias and your position as a fair and impartial leader not be too far behind.

Holding Others Accountable - Wednesday - July 14, 2021

HOLDING OTHERS ACCOUNTABLE

Long before you even consider holding others accountable for their actions, you must be the leader that knows, understands, and will do everything within their power to make certain others know the standard, understand the standard, and also know that others are NOT mind readers.

Until you set the standard and lead by example with the standard then share that standard and set the expectations based on that standard.

Failing to do all three, you cannot under any circumstance truly hold anyone accountable because you have failed to either:
1. Clearly define the set standard/expectation
2. Followed up to ensure that the standard/expectation is 100% understood
3. Know they are not mind readers and even if it means repeating #1 & #2 over and over again you will do so

COLD, HARD TRUTH ALERT: If for any reason you are NOT holding yourself accountable to the same standard/expectation you are setting for others please know you are WRONG!

HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE - Tuesday - July 13, 2021

Today, a cold hard reality alert: PEOPLE WILL GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO HOLD OTHER PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE LONG BEFORE THEY WILL ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF HOLDING THEMSELVES ACCOUNTABLE.

As a current and future leader, that wants to become one of the great ones. Well, if you are NOT first holding yourself accountable you will never be a leader. You will never be someone that people will turn to. Actually, you will become some one that people will go out of their way to avoid.

You cannot be a true leader if you do not begin with yourself, FIRST.

An individual that would rather hold others accountable but does not hold themselves accountable falls right smack in the middle of the "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO" category. Being the definitive example of the "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO" is actually the OPPOSITE of a Leader.

You want to lead, you want to be the one people come to, you want to be the one that makes more leaders then you must act like it. You have no choice. As to be a leader, a genuine leader, then it begins with you. You cannot just open your mouth and say, 'today, I am a leader." It does not work that way.

The only way for a leader to be a leader is to put in the work. The work is also non-stop, 24/7. There is no shirking of that responsibility.

Do not go trying to hold others accountable or push them to do what you "believe" they should be doing if you are NOT willing to do it first. Also, do not put it in your mind that because you are older or outlasted everyone else you are an "Automatic Leader" because let me be the first to tell you; there is NO SUCH THING.

So stop kidding yourself and others and get to work. Start putting in the work and make it happen. Start with yourself and then, maybe, you can start holding others accountable for their actions (or inactions). But do not, for one second, start to think that you can begin influencing the behavior, thoughts, words or actions of others if you are not prepared to it yourself.

Get to work,

ACCOUNTABILITY - Monday - July 12, 2021

July 12 - Today, I want to talk to you about ACCOUNTABILITY.
As you begin or continue on your self-leadership development journey, you will discover the one thing that will set you apart from the crowd: ACCOUNTABILITY
Accountability is defined as the "quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions."
Throughout life there will always be varying degrees (or levels) of accountability and you will encounter them all. How others project their level of accountability IS a direct reflection on who they are as leaders and as followers. Who are the ones willing to call shenanigans and the ones that would rather stick their head in the sand than to go face-to-face with the reality of addressing what must be addressed.
As a current and future leader, it serves you best to work on ACCOUNTABILITY (from a complete 360° degree perspective).
When it comes to prioritizing Accountability there is first how you hold yourself accountable. Then how you hold others accountable. Lastly, how others hold you accountable.
These three variations are non-negotiable and all of them must be mastered. However, make absolutely certain you begin with yourself long before you start to hold others accountable and/or questioning others that attempt to hold you accountable.
Join Me Tomorrow As We Continue Talking About Accountability.
REMEMBER: ACTION > WORDS

SURROUNDING YOURSELF IN POSITIVITY - Friday - July 9 - 2021

SURROUNDING YOURSELF IN POSITIVITY.

As you work on your developing and growing your self-leadership you start to see the good and the bad around. Your mindset begins to change when it comes to easily identifying the good and the bad, the positive and the negative. Once you start doing that you recognize that the negativity has been what has been holding you back all this time.

Your growth and success as a human being relies on rising about the negativity in order to become a better human being, thus becoming a better leader, better father/mother, better mentor and so on.

However, when it comes to shedding the negative and wrapping yourself in the positive it can become a daunting task. It should never be daunting. It should be easy to want to be better. No one would want you to be a failure, no one wants to not succeed. Well, maybe those few individuals who have resentment, fear, and anger and maybe a sense of entitlement as to why you and not them? Those are the ones that are bringing the negativity full force. Those are also the ones that will work overtime to bring you down.

Sure some of them may put on a facade (a front) and say oh no not me, but true to their form the moment you are out of earshot they begin with the negativity. Then when confronted they inevitable response "Oh I was just kidding."

Were they?

Folks, that level of negativity and toxicity is what you should be mindful of not only today but for all the days of your life. Sadly, it may become a full time job just to eradicate those negative individuals from your life. And you may ask yourself what if that negativity comes from people close to me? My answer: So you are willing to NOT be a better human being, being a better parent, better spouse, better leader all because you do not want to hurt someone's feeling? I DON'T THINK SO!

COLD HARD TRUTH ALERT: That someone whose feelings you do not want to hurt has more than likely hurt you (for far too long). Where's the equity in that? Where is the accountability?

WHAT DO YOU DO TO SET A POSITIVE TONE FOR THE DAY?

Today, I want to talk to you about WHAT DO YOU DO TO SET A POSITIVE TONE FOR THE DAY?

Life is difficult enough without having to start the day in a negative manner. That is why being proactive and setting the day’s tone first thing in the morning is what will make all the difference.

What are you doing to set that positive tone, everyday?

You have to do it first thing because when you delay in setting that positivity the negativity will creep in, take over, and trying to set the positive tone will be all but impossible.

As part of your personal growth, self-leadership development, professional development it is crucial to get your mind wrapped in a sense of positivity, believe in positivity, and act on that positivity. It is imperative to have the day on your side. Do not fail yourself and keep the positivity of the day in your corner.

Everyone, the success factor is exponentially high when you set the daily standard of making the positive a priority.

Folks, that’s the only secret to winning the day and succeeding. Why is making positivity the daily standard such a secret? See, far too many people would rather let the friction of the day overpower them and ultimately rule them thus squashing all their dreams, hopes, ambitions, vision, mission and goals. Well Not You!

Most certainly, it involves work to make positivity a priority but as #work is a four-letter word those not wanting to succeed will NOT put in the work. They give up long before they start. Little do they know that in just 21 days they can create a habit of positivity and in 90 days they create a lifestyle of positivity & success.

You can do it, you can make it happen all because I know you can and you know you can & will do it.

REMEMBER: ACTION > WORDS

'Till Tomorrow, I Thank you,
Dave

An Observation On Absence

The other day, I ran across something that got me to thinking. It struck me to my core. I was shocked at how much it did affect me.

"If your absence does not bother them then your presence never mattered to them in the first place."

It was with that one sentence that so much became clear to me. In my life, I have found myself in and among individuals that have for one thing or another have taken advantage of my sense of loyalty and commitment.

Now before you begin to think 'there goes Dave, again' this is not about me being a victim. Far from it. This is about be realizing that sometimes that while I wanted to be right about people I was not. It is my flaw to deal with. I have always wanted to see the good in people but there have been some that no matter how far into the sand I stuck my head they were not good people.

Yet, when the time came to part ways. I realized that they moved on to other people to latch themselves onto and do to them what I allowed for so long with no reason to justify. With them gone, it was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Do I miss them?

Of course, I do. They are human beings, after all.

But, I do not miss them for what I allowed myself to let them to do to me. Oh, those days are long gone.

No lie, there was a sense of absence and emptiness. Yet, the absence I felt has now be replaced with a sense of relief and the emptiness has been filled with growth. My Personal Growth.

Now as I write these words, I picture the next time we meet. Ships passing in the night, no call, no signal, no horn, staying on our respective course off to make a port call on a distant shore. As it should have always been.

Thank you,
David Guerra

Self-Leadership - Making The Time

Self-Leadership - Making The Time

In the previous blog entry, I talked about how it was important to find the time. How everyone has the same twenty-fours and such. Now, I want to share with you about how to make that time. How to extract the time you need to expand on what is important while minimizing downtime. The next set of questions is where to extract the time from? What to do with that time? Then how install the coming change that implementing the new found time will most bring.

Making time and how to make that time is not an easy task. It is by no means anywhere close to being easy. Well, I exaggerate (a little). It is easy to make time if all you do day in; day out is waste time. If all you have in your life is time to goof around, play on the PS4, or go party with your friends, then yes making the time is easy. However, it becomes a difficult task when we are already doing the important work. The kind of work we do when we are in school, putting in the hours from 9 to 5, and those awesome side hustles.
All that and then we feel like we are still spinning our wheels? Well, no need for the anxiety to set in. Taking a few common-sense approaches will help identify the time, adjusting the time, and implementing the time changes. Let’s get started:

AUDIT YOUR DAY, WEEK, MONTH, YEAR

Auditing your day may take some time to complete. As some days look the same as the previous day, I guarantee you every day is not the same but you know this. While you are auditing your day remember to note everything you from when you start working, what is the first thing you work on, when you take a break, what time you take lunch and so on.

Once you collect your data, next comes determining what works, what does not work, and what you want to start working on, among other things specific to you. Additionally, the audit data collected will also show you things you may not want to see or believe. Good or Bad, it is all a learning experience. A learning experience in that taking a step back will show us who we really are because in a day-to-day setting we are knee deep in the muck that we don’t see all that we really do because it is just the norm.

IDENTIFY WHAT CAN BE CHANGED THEN CHANGE IT

After collecting, sorting and dissecting the data there is a bit more work to do. Now the raw data is going to reveal the truth. The whole, good and bad, truth. The honest truth of what you have and have not been doing will be revealed. It is now the time to get to work.

Now is the time to identify what can be change. To do this, you will have to (honestly) determine what are you spending too much time on and not getting return on that time investment. Next, extract from the collected data what are you spending not enough time on but need to give more time to increase the return on the expanded time investment.

The final step in the identification process is to identify and create the CHANGE you feel (from your gut) you need to make. Having determined the time to be moved, shuffled, re-organized, re-prioritized, and re-distributed you are ready.  Next, comes implementation and putting to work the impending change(s).

WORK THE PLAN

When it comes to implementing change in your life there are three trains of thought when it comes to implementing and working on the change(s): all at once, one thing at a time, or clustering the changes. The latter two are more apt to take root in that anything that does not appear right or appropriate can be worked on, modified, adjusted. Unfortunately, this is a luxury that does not accompany the “all at once” option.

Take that knowledge for what it is worth, acting on the change “one thing at a time” is my preferred method to deliver and act on change. It will certainly increase the level of buy-in and acceptance. Sometimes, the want to change is not enough. Whereas, through slow and deliberate actions in the way the plan is implemented and worked will increase success.

Once the first change is implemented then another can safely be brought in and implemented. By taking those slow, deliberate steps you are on the path to integrating the next change. The plan is to make the change an easy implementation of the changes to you, your life, your mission, and goals.

Throughout the entire process or working the plan you have another set of tasks to do. Those tasks are being constant and consistent when working on the fit that working the plan will make. Be careful for once you stop being constantly consistent is when you revert back to your old ways. You will be negating everything you have done up to this point.

The goal was to make the time to work on those things that will make a return on the time investment you make. The goal is also to minimize the continued action of those things that are not generating the kind of return you seek. Thus, it falls on you to stay the course, always. Staying the course of progress and change will most certainly ensure you are making the time. Isn’t that what success is all about?

David Guerra

Self-Leadership - Finding The Time

Self-Leadership - Finding The Time

Being a leader involves a different type of commitment and dedication. The difference comes from being a a committed and dedicated leader 24/7/365. That's non-negotiable.

Being a leader is your other full time job. It is going to take up that much time. That is one reason most people feel they are ready to do what it takes to be a leader until it is time to step up and be the leader.

It is nothing against who they are as individuals, nor is it a strike against their knowledge, skills, wisdom and character. Far from it. Those that recognize that at this moment they are not ready to lead are great leaders in the making.

Once underway, there are people that know they cannot hack the toll leadership takes on the individual. Yet, there are those that decide to fake it and never make it are not even worthy of qualifying as a bad manager. The individuals that would rather continue faking it soon become "micro-managers" thus fail to give respect to those they are supposed to be leading. They will soon find themselves without true and genuine followers. Then what good are they?

What does finding the time have to do with knowing when to play your hand or when to fold'em?
Everything. If the individual is not prepared to find the time to work on her skillset or his soft-skills will amount nothing more than a hill of beans.

But there are only 24 hours in a day and eight of them are already spent sleeping!

True, but what about the other 16 hours? Eight of those sixteen are for working and working with the people you leading. That leaves eight hours for personal matters. Matters such as spending time with the family, hobbies, and personal development. All that and dinner, too?

You have to. You have no choice.

One thing to remember you and I and all us one thing in common. We all have the same 24 hours. Believe it or not every Doctor, Lawyer, Computer Engineer, Graphic Designer, Photographer, Janitor, Teacher, Bus Driver, and Student, all have those same 24 hours.

What does all that mean?

It means that while we are all unique individuals were are all, also the same. We have that same amount of time. Yet, there are plenty of people finding the time within those 24 hours to work on the commitment, dedication needed to become a better leader.

As you can see, it will be difficult but you have to find the time to be better. You have to use that time to grow both personally and professionally. In upcoming blog posts I will take a deeper dive into how to properly use your new found time.

CHANGE: Fight It or Invite It or Live Beside It

Welcome to 2021. COVID 19, New Year, New President, New Vice President, New vaccines, New You?

Again, welcome to 2021.  It's a new year and with that we hope new opportunities.  New opportunities for success and growth and whatever else this new year will bring.

Yet, none of that is assured.  What is assured and very well so guaranteed this change.  If 2020 taught us anything it is that change can happen at the drop of a dime and more change will follow right.  So why would 2021 be any different?

It will not be different.  It will also be different.  That's what change does.  So, expect 2021 to be full of change.  Anyone and I do mean anyone who believes doing nothing different in 2021 is in for rude awakening.  2021 is already proven to be the year of change.

Sure, we're still dealing with the fallout from last year.  Yet, their sales so much more that's coming because of that fallout.  How we approach that change and how we deal with change will make all the difference.  This is nothing new. I have been, for the longest time, making it battle cry to get people prepared for change.  To realize that change is going to happen whether they like it or not.

Yet, year after year, month after month, and day after day it continues to fall on deaf ears and here, we find ourselves again.  So, what is one more time?  While there are some people that I would like to beat it into their thick skull but I cannot as that is called assault and the judicial system highly frowns upon that. So, here I go again.

As the title states when it comes to change you can either fight it or invite it or live beside it.  There is nothing you can do about.  Change is going to happen.  So, of the three things I mentioned that you can do what you decide is up to you but ignoring it is not an option.  Ignoring change is inviting the dark side to creep in.  The dark side is no place for leaders, current or future leaders.

Fight it: by this I mean, you will have to fight it to the point that you get your results, your expected/anticipated results.  By fighting change you will take control and have the power to direct its outcome in your favor.  Fighting change means the results that occur all your results.  You get to direct the outcome of the change.  Failing to fight it means it's happening and you are going to have to accept the end results.

Invite it: Inviting change means you are accepted the fact that change is coming and it's going to happen.  It does not mean you're going to roll over and take it what it does mean; you are preparing for the generally accepted outcome.  It also means that you recognize the need for change and the resistance usually associated with change will not come from you.  You are ready to "roll with the punches" no matter how hard they hit.

Live beside it: a living beside change does not mean that you're rolling over and playing possum and allowing change to have its way with you.  Living beside change means that you have accepted the fact that you are powerless to control, manipulate in any shape or form, change.  Living beside change means you are prepared for the inevitable, no matter what that change is.

Now, the ball is in your court.  You need to decide how you're going to except and deal with change in 2021.  I cannot do it for you, you have to do it for yourself.

There is a lot of work to do!  Get to work!

Leaders: You Call Yourself An Activist But Are You One?

In this point of modern world history there are plenty of individuals who claim themselves to be “activists” but haven’t a single clue on what an activist really, truly is or what it takes to become one. Right now, all over the world there are individuals who are stepping up their game but those are few and far between. I would be safe at putting it somewhere between 1 in every 100,000 are stepping up their Activist game. Those few step up to be a leader. Why do so few step up?

To put it quite simply: They would rather be an un-informed “Johnny-come-lately”, they would rather be detached third party followers led by the nose rings to the next trough. To go into even more simpler terms: Because it is EASIER to say they are an activist than to actually be an activist!

Being an activist involves just a little more than posting on Facebook or re-tweeting someone else’s original post on twitter, and anything else on social media. Being a true Activist means so much more than just being a social media warrior. It means being informed, contributing, recognized member of the community you support plus a whole lot more to include being a leader, a Genuine Leader to ALL PEOPLE.

Now, let’s break it down!

Definition of the word: Activist
The Merriam-Webster dictionary and website states an Activist is defined as, “one who advocates or practices activism: a person who uses or supports strong actions (such as public protests) in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue.”

“one who advocates”

Let’s break that word down as well.

There are three definitions as a noun, an advocate is “one who pleads the cause of another”, number two “one who defends or maintains a cause or proposal” and number three, “one who supports or promotes the interests of a cause or group”

I will not insult your intelligence but as I read these definitions I can see where things start to break down.

If we stop at the first part of both definitions, it all falls apart, because far too many people live by the TLDR effect they get stop at the first part of the definition.

Let me go one step further and this might be where I will lose some of you as what I will be presenting in this post might not be to the liking of most people. It stands to reason that I will lose some readers because I am about to share one word that many know and understand but absolutely refuse to do because of any number of reasons. That word? That word is WORK.

If I have not scared you off, then give me a minute or two.

I want to break down the word ACTIVIST one more time. The word is rooted in the word ACTIVE.

Active is defined as “characterized by action rather than by contemplation or speculation”, “producing or involving action or movement”, “quick in physical movement”, and “marked by present operation, transaction, movement, or use”. There are several other definitions and they all continue to focus on action.

Action! Action means you are doing.

Therefore, to truly make an impact you have to take Action and that means stop with the passive activism (talk about an oxymoron) because any keyboard warrior can be a passive activist. But where’s the fun in that? Seriously, the fun is in the doing. The fun and adventure is doing more that just hitting the like button or the subscribe and follow.

The fun, adventure, and the doing come from going just one step beyond being tagged as a keyboard warrior.

The fun, adventure, doing and accomplishment comes from actually putting in the work.

YEP, HERE COMES THE WORK PART.

It is time to back away from the keyboard and get into the thick of it.

Being active means, you have to do the work, put in the work, get to work.

How do you put in the work, do the work, get to work?

You stop posting the passive-aggressive and start working with those you support.

By being passive aggressive you do more to hurt your cause than you do to support it.

By being passive aggressive your message might just be that, your message and not the message of what you are “supporting”

Thus, by working directly with those you are supporting you are getting the CORRECT and DIRECT access to their mission and vision.

By having direct access to the MISSION and VISION you are able to properly present your direct support and apply direct action to the “cause”. Now you are making more of an impact instead of being someone who is just “buzzing” around, making noise and not taking it to the next level.

Taking it to the next level is what you must do to get recognized as someone committed to the “cause” whatever it may be.
Taking it to the next level is how you get to be part of something that is bigger than you.
Being committed to the “cause” is what is going to earn you the respect of your peers, your followers, and most of all it is how you become a greater leader because you are leading by example.

What I am trying to say is it is high time to get involved to get active with your activism, be an Active Activist.

IT IS TIME TO BE A LEADER!
