The Leadership Minute #18
Leadership Principle: Set The Example
The one thing you will NEVER hear a great leader say is “Do as I say and not as I do.”
Those are words of managers. Those of words of individuals that would rather throw their weight and position around like a sledgehammer. Those are managers that manage people through fear and intimidation.
A Great Leader will say: “Watch me do this”
A Great Leader will step out in front and do what must be done. However, the leader must never carry the entire load, otherwise why have employees or followers? Lead by example, show them the way, be the trailblazer, the pathfinder but DO NOT DO IT ALL YOURSELF
Of course you will be tempted. That’s OK, it means you care. However, as a leader you have to be strong enough to let go some of the need to do it all and let those that you manage, supervise, or lead do what must be done.
If you trained them the right way, set the standard and shown them that it can be done then trust them enough to do it.
