The Leadership Minute #15 Know Yourself and Seek Self-Improvement

The premise behind this leadership principle is look deep inside yourself. Look for what you are and what you are not. Also look for what you know and don’t know. The trick behind knowing yourself and seeking self-improvement is to be honest with yourself, otherwise why bother?

People will follow someone who is constantly evaluating and checking himself. Someone that is constantly seeking self improvement even if it means that in order to be improving herself she must improve the lives of others.

No matter how you look at it Know yourself, once you have identified the areas that you are lacking then work on those. But don’t just stop there. Work on everything because no matter what some people think or tell you there is always room for improvement in EVERYTHING.

David Guerra

On What You Want (You want it? You do it!)

If you are not doing something NOW to get you to where you want to be then you are NOT LIVING.

If you are doing something for someone else then you are NOT LIVING (for yourself, you are living for the other guy/gal).

When you see yourself on that stage or publishing that book then you are really living. When you are living you are happy. Really Happy!

No one else can write the book for you (sure there are ghost writers but you still have to do some of the work), you have to do it.

No one else can be on stage for you. They will be on stage for themselves if you are NOT. Do what it takes to get on stage!

So get to LIVING, so you can get to being HAPPY!

David Guerra

The Leadership Minute #14 Be Tactically & Technically Proficient [video]

Be the best you can be at your job. As leader people will expect you to do what you are doing 100%. You cannot fail that responsibility and you cannot fail those that follow you. If you cannot be technically proficient in what you are doing then how can you expect yourself to hold anyone accountable for their actions? Don’t come across as faker or a poser. Know your job 100% and know the jobs of those you lead. You and they will be better for it.

on Happiness (Your happiness)

If you are complaining you are NOT advancing and you are certainly NOT happy.

If you turn to others to give you permission to be happy, you never will be.

What if those you are soliciting for permission to be happy are not happy themselves, then what?

One, they are not going to give you permission to be happy. Two, they will do everything in their power to ensure that you are never happy again. Trust me on this, I have dealt with such people for a very long time.

I dealt with them until one day someone who is happy told me that I can no longer fall for them, their nonsense, their drama, and most definitely their unhappiness.

The only person that can give you permission to be happy today, tomorrow, and forever is YOU!
You are the only one that controls you happiness.

Be Happy!

David Guerra

The Leadership Minute #13: Leadership Trait: Be Imaginative [video]

Being imaginative means you are making timely and appropriate changes to your goals, mission, and vision. Both personal and professional (that of your organization). You are not making those arbitrary changes but you are making them with deliberate intent. You are thinking things through, you are trying to work the problem. This is when being creative is a good thing.

This is also your time to be very imaginative. Especially, when it comes to reaching for that one thing and who knows it might just be what the organization was looking for all along. As a leader, your followers are going to want you to do that on a constant basis. It shows to them that they can turn to you and they know that you are up to delivering something good. As always, be innovative and think outside that box.

If you don't see the video above, here is the link: https://youtu.be/Q8jRC_FTfeg

on DREAMS (Your Dreams)

Everyone knows there are two kinds of people in the world: Positive & Negative.

To me the negative considerably outnumbers the positive. I know that's not very optimistic thinking but reality is not usually optimistic.

While all of us have dreams. It is when we have dreams that we feel very passionate about that we can do something to make those dreams a reality.

However, a word or two of advice. You will be tempted to go to others for their advice in making that dream(s) a reality. That's all fine and good. Choose wisely when it comes to whom you go to for that advice. Ideally, you want to seek out the advice of those that have achieved or are achieving their dreams.

Unfortunately, individuals typically pick those that are not on any track to achieving their own dreams or have tried, failed, and gave up on making their dreams a reality.

It is those individuals that will bring their bad habits, bad ideas, bad opinions, and just plain bad karma to you and your dreams. This is where things start to go bad for you.

THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING!

How to correct this?

You avoid those who have the bad attitude. If you have spent any amount of time around anyone that has a good attitude and someone with bad attitude then you know who to avoid.

What if you are already wrapped up or mixed in with someone that has that bad attitude and is dragging you down?

Easy. You walk away! No! You run away. Don't forget to thank them for their time. If they ask what happened, why you are walking away, tell them you are taking their advice and moving on. Then leave! RUN AWAY!

IMPORTANT: I work "taking their advice" I don't mean you have to act on it!

Thank you for your time,
David Guerra

Do You Know Your Stuff or Just Know Someone?

Geeks, Sportos, Wastoids, Whatever!

Remember that? Remember them?

Back in high school, everyone was put into a group. While it only lasted for four years, the need to fit in was surely present the entire time. Of course, everyone wanted to be part of the "In" crowd to hang out with the "Cool" kids. For some strange reason, it was the "cool" kids that you wanted to know.

Good thing was high school and you left all that behind you many years ago. You did leave it behind you? I hope you left it behind. Geez, I hope you left it way behind.

Well, about 99.9998% of us let all that childish nonsense, teenage ego, and false bravado go. When we left high school (and college) we had to start over.

Every time we took a new job or started a new career had to start over.

For the most part, you, others and I now rely on our acquired skills, knowledge, ethics and work performance to move us up the corporate ladder.

Unfortunately, for some it is not all about that. That's where people have gone wrong. They feel that by being part of a group or just by knowing someone is all they need to move up. Unfortunately, some truly believe that their behavior in high school is the only way they are going to succeed. They believe that in the business world it is ALL about who you know and NOT what you know. Oh my, someone is in for a rude awakening.

The cold hard reality is who you know is but a small percentage of moving up.

No one worth their salt is going to give you a glowing recommendation or promotion solely because they know you.You must have something a bit more tangible to bring with that glowing recommendation

Think about this: Why would anyone put their professional reputation on the line based on the mere fact that they know you and NOT know what you know or are capable of delivering or bringing to the company? NO ONE!

That's why knowing your stuff is important.

What do you think?

Thank you,
David Guerra
