The Leadership Minute #40: Sense of Humor

The Leadership Minute #40
Character Traits of a Leader: Sense of Humor

A leader has got to have a sense of humor. A leader cannot go around stoic, with a frown, or serious all the time. This does not work for anyone, it is bad. It is bad for the leader as an individual. It is bad for the leader as a leader.

Your followers, those you lead expect you to have a sense of humor. That's because there will times and situations that you will have no control over and you are just going to have to laugh at it. You are going to have to chuckle, you are going to have to laugh right along with them.

Speaking of laughing with them. As a leader, never laugh at them, don't belittle them, don't be mean, don't do or say anything at their expense. Don't bad mouth individuals whether they are present or not. Do not bad mouth anyone who is not present because they cannot defend themselves. Doing so makes you a BULLY!

Whatever you do, do not laugh at people because I guarantee just like you are laughing at somebody that person is laughing at YOU!

The Leadership Minute #39: Candor

The Leadership Minute #39
Character Traits of a Leader: Candor

Candor is the quality of being open and honest in expression. Frankness, unreserved, sincere, and passion. It's a little bit of everything.

Think about it, if you can be open and you can be honest with those that you lead, those that follow you, guess what? They are going to appreciate it that much more coming from you. You are not pulling any punches and nobody wants a leader that pulls punches. A leader that pulls punches is a sign of a bad leader.

As a leader, you want to be able to go in and rip the band-aid right off. Obviously, there are going to be times when sincerity and restraint may be called for but for the most part DO NOT pull any punches.

Be open, be sincere, be passionate about what you say and be frank.

Everybody appreciates candor. Everybody expects candor. Sometimes there will be those few that say they want candor but they don't want it. That's OK because in the long run, candor is what everybody needs.

You as a leader, them as followers, them as future leaders, everybody wants it, everybody needs it, most of all everybody should expect it.

David Guerra

Q & A #DareToBe Tweet Chat: Self-Worth (Tuesday, May 19, 2015)

Every Tuesday evening at 8pm eastern, the #DareToBe tweetchat takes place on Twitter. The #DareToBe tweetchat is hosted by Andrea Sanchez (@asanchez16), an Editor, Writer, Communications Executive and according to her Twitter profile, from Houston, Texas.

Every week a different topic. On the evening of May 19, 2015, the topic was Self-Worth. I could not capture all the twitter based answers to the 10 questions asked by @ASanchez16. However, I present the questions and  my answers (with a bit of amplification). Please enjoy and if you can, please joins us. Look for the #DareToBe hashtag every Tuesday evening.

Self-Worth
Define worthiness.
Worthiness is having a sense of accepted value & character.

What is the difference between worthiness and cockiness?
One has humility written all over it. The other one well, it just ain't right. Cockiness is not something that should be worn as a badge but it should used as benchmark that should be seldom crossed.

I am worthy of _______________.
I am worthy of the results my team and I get from the hard work we put in. We've earned it, together.

How can a humble person be better at acknowledging their self worth?
It may be a difficult thing to do but a humble person must step into the limelight every once in a while. Otherwise, someone else might just claim the credit that was earmarked for you.

To have high self worth one must __________.
One must be able to deliver on that worth 100% of the time (it's non-negotiable). If one refuses to give it their all then why bother. Right now, someone else is putting in the 100% that's needed and they will be recognized. It behooves you to do it before someone else does.

In what do you find your worthiness?
I find my worthiness in doing what I do because I do the best that I can. As long as I like it, I'm good with it! Doing the best that you can is always going to take you to place that makes you feel worthy.

Can a confident person feel unworthy? Explain.
A confident person can feel unworthy. As humans, we have all sorts of emotions running around our mind at any given time. Unworthiness included.

______________ makes one question their worth.
Accomplishing something then wondering what's next makes me question my worth. When something comes to an end there is this void of time and emotion that was fill when I was working on something . Now that void must be filled and that takes its toll on my sense of worth because I question what's next and will it be less or better than the previous accomplishment.

Success is not cohesive with worthiness. Agree/disagree? Explain.
Success is not cohesive with worthiness as success can be accomplished at any level. Worthiness is at a higher and deeper level in us, as human beings. Worthiness drives us in a different way. By this I mean, worthiness is what tells us we can start and complete something. Success is completing that something we started in a positive manner. In a way that could be considered a sizable return on the initial investment.

The Leadership Minute #38: Assertiveness

The Leadership Minute #38
Character Traits of a Leader: Assertiveness

Assertiveness means being self-assured and confident without being aggressive. It is a learnable skill. However, a word of warning there is a fine line between being assertive and aggressive. Those that follow you expect that assertiveness to be present in everything you do and say. They demand clear, concise direction from their leader.

They also expect that that direction is presented in a manner that is not dictatorial but in a way that ensures that everyone understand why it must be done and that it MUST be done in the manner and time expected.

Individuals that have mastered assertiveness know that so long as they use their power for good can make good things happen for the organization.

It is when they use it for bad they they find themselves on the wrong side of the employment line. Don't be that kind of leader. Instead be self-assured, be extremely confident, be assertive but don't be aggressive

The Leadership Minute #37: Will

The Leadership Minute #37
Character Traits of a Leader: Will

The ability to control yourself. The mental ability to control yourself to be strong. It is the determination to do something difficult or different, something out of the ordinary.

As an example, those individuals that want to quit smoking say “I will do it. I have the willpower.” That’s what that is.

Those that want to climb Mt. Everest must have the mental willpower to do it, as well as the physical strength and stamina. It all works together.

As a leader you definitely have to have that willpower to outlast everybody, especially those that follow you. Those that follow you want a leader that is going to go above and beyond. That goes further than they go because, guess what?

They want to catch up and at some point those followers are going to want to surpass you and move beyond what you do. Allow them to do that! Let them do that! Expect them to do that!

Let them know you expect your followers to surpass what you have done!

The Leadership Minute #36: Improvement

The Leadership Minute #36
Character Traits of a Leader: Improvement

Improvement is the secret to being a better leader. You, as a leader, are constantly improving, you are constantly mentally, physically, morally, ethically, you are constantly improving yourself. You are becoming a better person.

In doing so, others see it. Those that follow you, see it, they expect it from you. If you are not improving yourself they will see that you are not doing it and what’s the point for them? They will give up and what’s the point for you as their leader? What happens then?

As a leader, you definitely have to constantly and continually improving, making yourself a better person, making things better for the organization, making things better for your employees, those that follow you. In return for making them better, they will make you better.

a • ware • ness / Do you have what it takes?

Do you have what it takes to be constantly and continually aware?

Being aware is one thing. Having the wherewithal of being constantly aware is something else.
The ability to see, feel, and acknowledge all that is going on around is a trait that many people THINK they have, few actually do, and a miniscule amount can actually master.

Those that master it, do so after many years of trial and error. Just like anything that we master, it does take time. However, the ones that are naturally aware of all that is around them usually don't know it and let that skill fall by the wayside, never to be fully utilized.

However, by being cognizant of the fact that it is something that comes naturally (remember, survival of the fittest and survival of those that can adapt to change) they stand a chance at achieving greatness. Don't worry you do as well.

I am not going to pass along the secret to raising your awareness in every situation and in any setting:
Keep your eyes, ears, and mind open all the while keeping your mouth shut.

The Leadership Minute #35: Maturity

The Leadership Minute #35
Character Traits of a Leader: Maturity

You reach a level that you are recognized as being mature. You are no longer a kid. You are no longer a child. You are no longer one of the guys.

You are an adult now. You are a leader. You behave like a leader. You have to think like a leader You are supposed to act like a leader, you are supposed to be a leader. That's what those that follow you look for. That's why they come to you.

Why?

They want you to take them places. They want you to make things happen. They expect it.

As a leader, your days of being one of the guys are over. Your days of "chillin'" and "hanging out" are over. Well, to some degree.

You cannot do it all the time and, most of all, you can't do it with your buddies. Who gets the good details (assignments) and who gets the bad details you cannot delegate the good to your buddies. You just cannot do that any more. You cannot play favorites. Those days are gone!

As the leader, you are expected to be fair, impartial, and dish out some justice when you have to. You have to do that 100% of the time.

David Guerra

The Leadership Minute #34: Coolness

The Leadership Minute #34
Character Traits of a Leader: Coolness

COOLNESS! Cool under fire. Someone who can remain calm and show self control. Those that can remain calm, composed, and collected when others can't, don't or won't are the true leaders.

They show that confidence, reassurance, and it passes down to their followers. The followers expect that from a successful leader and that's a good thing.

As long as you can remain cool, calm and collected you are going to go places. Why? No one wants to see someone running around their head cut off and asking "who" or "what" or hooting and hollering, basically not having a clue, and that's not a leader.

A leader has got to be cool calm collected 100% of the time, not just when it suits them.
