100 Days, 100 Ways Day 30: Read More

What are you reading? Something from the New York Times Best Seller List? Your kid's Science book? A Comic Book? A Classic? Junk mail? If you answered yes, that's a Very Good thing. If you are not currently reading something then it is time to crack open a book (or two or more).

Read something all the time. Always have a book handy, either bound or electronic format. Always have a book you can dive into no more than arm's length away.

Reading is essential to life. Reading is what opens our minds and expands our horizons. When you read you increase your vocabulary, keep you mind performing at peak levels, increase your knowledge of the world, and among other things you experience the world through the eyes and thoughts of someone else.

If you are not too sure what to read first, that's OK.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 29: Let Go Of What You Cannot Change: The Past

Letting go of the past is one of those things that people say is easy but in reality it is one of the most difficult things anyone can do.

However, it does not hurt to try and let go of the past. Set free those grudges that we have of people that have hurt us, that have done us wrong, that have made us feel bad, that have no right to make us feel like they did.

Of course, in letting go of their past transgression does NOT mean you have to associate with them. It just means that you are not going to give them any more power over you. Power that you gave them when you allowed yourself to stay hung up on the past. A past that you can no longer change.

The only thing you can do is change the future. Changing the future begins with letting go, so let it go!

Thanks. -Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 28: Have A Little Humiltiy, Will Ya?

Everyone, at one point or another in their lives will be humbled by something that puts things in perspective. The birth of a child, a wedding, the death of loved one, seeing your first book go to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, a snail moving across your driveway, a sun rise, a rain storm, and the list goes on and on. However, there are more times than not that we forget to be humble. We forget what humility is.

Especially, as we start to feel that the world is EXPECTED to stop when we want it to stop. To focus ALL its attention on us. To be at our BECK and CALL 24/7 with no exception. Heaven help the individual who does not answer your text within 5 seconds after hitting the send button or the person who doesn't answer your call on the first ring. Of course, PERMANENT BANISHMENT to the person who lets your call go to voice mail. To the GULAG for them.

Then again, when it comes to people trying to contact you, you have no problem letting the voice mail pick up the call and you will answer the email when you feel like it, and text message responses: FORGET ABOUT IT! Seriously, you know who you are. I am just as guilty as you are.

There is a solution: HAVE A LITTLE HUMILITY. LEARN IT, KNOW IT, LIVE IT!!!

To have a little humility is to be modest and respectful. Basically, it is to REALISTICALLY address your self-worth. To be grounded and KNOW and UNDERSTAND that you are NOT PERFECT, that NO ONE IS.

I KNOW I AM NOT PERFECT.

After recognizing that fact, it is really easy to be humble and stay humble all the days of your life. The trick is to accept the fact that the SUN does NOT RISE or SET because of you. It rises and sets because of ALL OF US.

For those that need a biblical reminder that having little to no humility is a bad thing: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34). If you need more references, all you need to do is LOOK AROUND YOU. The world and ALL the Good that exists is because of people that know and live Humility.

I Thank You For Your Time.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 26: Try To Be Happy and Let It Show

Let Your Smile Show. Let the world know you are HAPPY. Whether you are happy or not, just make to effort to put a smile on and be HAPPY.

If you try to fake a smile and a happy attitude, it won't last for long because eventually a fake smile and fake happiness will convert to a Genuine Smile and Genuine Happiness. Don't believe me, give it a try.

Everyday, go all out to keep a smile on your face, no matter what. Keep up with the attitude of Happiness.

Soon, you won't even give it a second thought because the smile and happiness will just come naturally and stay with you for all the days of your life.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 25: Make Time To Meditate and Do It!

A couple of posts ago, I talked about how moving at 100mph is the new normal. I talked about not being so serious so often. Something that you can do to help bring you back to a more normal pace.

MEDITATE

Meditate EVERYDAY.

Not sure how to meditate. Try the following:
1. Set some time aside for yourself.
2. Set no less than 30 minutes aside.
3. Set the TV to OFF.
4. Set the cell phone to OFF.
5. Set the PC/Laptop/iPad to OFF.
6. Set the rest of humans in your life to OFF.
7. Find a comfortable place to sit.
8. Make certain that you have as much silence as possible.

Now you are ready to begin.First, concentrate on your breathing and get it into a rhythm that is both deep and calming.  Then start to consciously relax your body from your head down to your neck to you arms, hands then down you back and front. Continue down your legs all the way to the tips of your toes. Now that you are relaxed, begin to clear your mind.

Empty your mind of all your worries, fears, doubts, joys, and everything else that accompanies your day-to-day life. This may be difficult at first, you may want to throw in the towel and call this meditation "mumbo jumbo" a lot of nonsense but don't give up. It will get easier as you go along.

Work at clearing your mind and before you know it you will start to revel in the fact that during that time you will be clear-headed and stress and anxiety will start to leave your life. You will feel better even after just one time. Imagine how much better you will feel when Meditation becomes a habit.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 23: Don't Be So Serious

When we go around living at 100mph we tend to overlook the little things. We are moving way too fast to stop and smell the roses. If you like driving fast and always worrying about the impending crash then it is time to slow down.

Being serious all the time creates unnecessary stress. Stress, in general, complicates things. Unnecessary stress really complicates things. To minimize stress, especially unnecessary stress, you  must do what you can to stop taking life so seriously!

Of course, life is serious but it is how we deal with the big things, as well as, the little things that makes all the difference. Laughing at the little things is easy. Not letting EVERYTHING get to you is not so easy.

That's why you need to take everything at face value. The big stuff is just that; the big stuff. The small stuff is the small stuff. Learn from both, good or bad, you have to take every opportunity to learn from everything that happens; good or bad, large or small.

Always learn from everything that happens and try not to repeat what you did, should things go wrong, again. Rest assured things will go wrong, again.

Lastly, try to do a lot of the good stuff, the stuff you like, and do that stuff all the time. Don't the stuff you like will certainly go a long way towards not always being so serious.

Thank you,
-Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 22: Stop the Drama

It's bad enough that our work days are filled with drama and depending on who we let into our lives the evenings can have just as much drama. Think about this: What does all that drama do to you?

Certainly, it does nothing good for you.

So stop creating your own drama and stop accepting drama from others as something that is "normal" and "expected".

Once you stop creating or accepting drama you will start to see the world in a different way. Different in that what were small problems are no longer the things that bring  your day to a grinding halt. Different in that you will start to feel less nervous about being around those people that demand drama be their middle name. Different in that you can start to live a more calm and relaxed life.

Note: if others find that they don't want to respect you and your "no drama" policy then it is obviously time to find new people to hang out with.

Remember: YOU are who you hang out with.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 21: Be Honest

Consider this entry as part two of WALK THE TALK.

One sure fire way to Walk the Talk is to be honest. By being honest you have nothing to hide. You have only the truth (good or bad) to back you up.

As humans, we love taking the path of least resistance whenever we can. Sometimes that path leads people to lie. Lies can sometimes get people out of trouble but for the most part it is when people forget their lies that things go awry. That is because LIES can lead to confusion. Confusion leads to strained relationships. Strained relationships leads to TROUBLE.

Good or Bad, telling truth may hurt at first, but once you are telling the truth all the time your attitude will change in that you will stand for the truth because that is what you believe, all the time. You will demand others to tell you the truth because nothing else will be accepted. You'll start to see the world a little different by living with accepting only the honest truth, no matter if it hurts or not.

Being honest, all the time, will do wonders for your reputation. Words like integrity, trustworthy, and ethical will become associated with you. Once you get that kind of association you are, most definitely, Walking the Talk!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 20: Walk The Talk

A lot of people "talk the talk". A lot of people make some noises that come from the side of their neck. Yet, others manage to "walk the walk" but do so aimlessly. They meander through life with a chip on their shoulder and really truly believe that they fully understand why the chip is there or where they are going.

While there is nothing wrong with a little self-confidence when it comes to "walking the walk" but if it is all style and no substance then why bother.

If you can talk the talk and walk the walk then why can't you Walk the Talk? It is truly unfortunately, there are so very few actually WALK THE TALK! By this I mean that it sure is one thing to say something and do something but are you DOING what you are Saying? Are you doing as you say? In simpler terms are you leading by example? or are you nothing but filler? hot air? all fluff?

Pick one thing you TRULY believe in and stick to it. Make it your mantra. Make it the one objective in your life that all other considerations bend and weave towards. Then and ONLY then are you WALKING THE TALK.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 19: Always Give Thanks

Though there is nothing like it in the world when people go out of their way to thank you. There is no greater feeling than the one we get in our gut when people recognize us for what we do for them and who does not like feeling good?

Now ask yourself when was the last time you gave someone Thanks?
      A. Five minutes ago
      B. Yesterday
      C. Two days ago
      D. Last month
      E. Give someone thanks? Hell no! I am the only one who deserves Thanks!

Seriously, if you answered anything, and I DO MEAN ANYTHING, other than letter A then you are WRONG and you are OVERDUE in giving someone a simple: THANK YOU!

What's it going to cost you to take some time and recognize all the good people and all the good things in your everyday life? Remember, no action, no event, no one is too big or too small to be left unrecognized.

Set aside some time everyday to either bang out a Thank You phone call or a Thank You email. Better still, do what I do at least once a week, write a Thank You note to someone who you feel has gone above and beyond for the week? Then repeat at least once a week. Before you know it you will be saying some very meaningful Thank You's to those that you never even thought deserved a second glance.

Thank You!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 18: Bring Some Sunlight Into Your Life

They say that if you want the best Vitamin D in the world you have to make it yourself. 10 minutes a day out in the sunlight is enough to make that Vitamin D happen naturally. It seems that all mammals can synthesize Vitamin D from cholesterol when sun exposure is adequate, thus called the "sunshine vitamin". It does wonders for your bones, it helps prevent rickets. However, I am not solely talking about the health benefits of walking out in the sunlight.

As we start approaching winter and the days get shorter and the nights get longer (which happens to be my favorite time of year) it is even more important to step outside and get re-vitalized, re-energized. The Sun as if by magic can transform you into a new person. It's true! Ever remember just one time, when you were a kid, that you were not happy being outside in the sun, playing and running? You felt more alive then than most people do now.

You can feel the warmth of the Sun bring new life and new hope, plus the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D into your body. So get out there and enjoy those rays, your bones will appreciate it.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 17: Start Blogging

If you are not already blogging, start now. Blogging is a great way of getting your message out there. Tell the world what you are passionate about. Tell the world that you got something to say and that you are going to say it.

Think you can't do it? Don't know what a blog really is? You are reading a blog right not. I have a message, no no I have plenty of messages. I have a lot to say so I am saying it. Sometimes it might not be popular, it might not be what people want to read and worse still, it might be something directly about the reader and yet their vanity does not allow them to know it is about them (and people like them). However, having a blog also means you have a great responsibility.

I have a great responsibility when it comes to sharing information and talking about "friends" and "associates" and "family" while I do not name names I do draw from everyday life to cite real world examples about what is right and what is wrong in the world at-large. If you think you don't think have something to say, just take a step back, look around you, and you might just be astonished at just how much there is to say.

Who knows you might just start a discussion that you never thought you would be a part of, let alone create. Along the way you might just meet some new and interesting people.

Not sure where to go to start a blog. You start right here at BLOGGER.com or head on over to WORDPRESS.com to get your very own blog up and running. Please let me know your new blog's web address as I would like to read what you have to say.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 16: Take More Pictures

If you are not capturing moments in time, you should start. If you are taking pictures, keep up the good work.

Get yourself a dedicated camera (film or digital) and start clicking away. Do not be tempted to use your cellphone camera. While it will do in a pinch, it is not a camera. It is a phone that happens to have a camera built-in.Go ahead and get yourself a camera and start taking pictures. Take pictures of family, friends, plants, bugs, anything and everything. Just take pictures of events or solo shots it does not matter just start capturing moments.

If you need a reason to capture those moments forever. Think about it like this, taking pictures is a great way to see life in a different way. It forces you to fine tune, fine focus your vision to a little box of the world. Once you see that the world is unique with every shot you take, the better person and a better photographer you will become.

Still not sure what to take a picture of try this (or something like this): A couple of years ago, I took one photo of the day's sunrise. I did this everyday for a year, even if I took no other picture that day, I took it. It was a lot of fun and I became a better photographer for it. I also shared those daily images with my friends and family, that kind of fun was priceless.

Not sure what kind of camera you want/need. That's OK with the quality of the cameras that are out on the market today you should have no problem finding one you can afford and use. There are plenty of great cameras out there for a reasonable price. Check out Amazon.com for some camera ideas.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 15: Have the Right Tool for the Right Job (Part 1)

You've been around long enough to know that you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. The same thing applies to anything and everything you do in life. You use the right tool for the right job. In this case, the right tool is a tool you wear just about everyday. Your Shoes!

That's right, your shoes. Are you wearing the right shoe for the right job? An uncomfortable shoe will be one of the first things you feel at the beginning of the day and the last thing you feel at night. An uncomfortable pair of shoes will do nothing but drag you and your attitude down. So why suffer all day long with a bad pair of shoes? Why make other suffer right along with you? Eventually, your frustration with those shoes will come shining through.

I understand the illogical logic that sometimes a bad pair of shoes just look good and to look good you need to suffer a little bit. If you absolutely positively have to wear an ill-fitting pair of shoes limit your time in them.

What I am saying is if you look good and FEEL good looking good then by all means keep on keeping on. However, when you don't FEEL good then by all means go out and get yourself the right tool.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 14: Make Others Feel Special

Everyone likes the VIP treatment. Everyone likes to be treated special. So why not pay it forward and make someone feel special. Why not make them feel like the VIP you want to be. Making someone feel special does not require hordes of paparazzi nor does it require expensive, lavish gifts (though it wouldn't hurt). All it takes treat others the way you want to be treated: lots of kindness, plenty of sympathy, piles of empathy, and two helping hands. This goes a long way especially, when it is done WITHOUT any expectation of the same being return.

If you really expect something in return then guess what? You are doing it wrong.

Be Genuine. Be Authentic. Be The Person You Have Always Wanted To Be.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 12: Memorize Something

You remember cramming an entire semester's worth of Political Science into one all-nighter the night before finals? or when you crammed all the traffic signs and rules just before you took your driver's license test. It was great when you passed but when you didn't, well that's a different story. Now you don't have to cram. However, it is good to memorize something, especially as we get older. There is a general theory about maintaining good brain function into your old age and that's to memorize at least one new thing every day. It helps to keep your memory sharp, your mind operating in top form, and you able to recall almost anything. Give it a shot, it doesn't and you might just learn something.

If you are not sure what to memorize, why not start off simple and small then work your way up to epic poems or quotes by notable philosophers, dignitaries, and a good joke or two. Still not sure how simple to start? OK, let me give you one suggestion; The Periodic Table of Elements.

Yep, memorize all 118 elements, their symbol, and what the symbol stands for, especially if the element and the symbol do not share any letters. Of course, I am not saying you should do all 118 in one day but do one a day. Start with H and end with Uuo and you are set for the next 118 days. It will be a lot of fun, my favorite is: Plumbum.

Get to memorizing.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 10: Get Out There

The world may be your oyster, however, very few of us have an oyster bed in our backyard. That means that in order to get those oysters you are going to have to get out and interact with the world. I promise you no one is going to ring your doorbell and hand you riches of the world and the secrets of the universe. REALITY CHECK: It is not going to happen (not in million years). Now you can sit there continuing to believe that the man or woman of your dreams will be standing in your doorway the next time the doorbell rings, or a completely random and unexpected check for two million dollars will be in tomorrow's mail. It is not going to happen.

All of this is possible and can only happen when you decide to leave your safe zone and get out there and face the world. Face it head on, meet new and interesting people. Do new and exciting things. Then who knows your Ryan Gosling or Scarlett Johansson might just be standing at your front door ready to hand you a check for untold riches.

Until that moment comes you have to do everything in your power to make it happen and you can do that be getting out there.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

See You Out There,

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 9: Go Take A Walk

They say that walking at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes each time will do your mind and body so much good. I have to agree. I feel so much better physically, when I am out on the road every morning. Mentally, I feel sharper being out there exposed to the last of the night as it starts to become day. There in the midst of a new day, your vision changes to see all the natural light that is known as the "magic hour" to photographers and cinematographers. Things all around look wonderful. This dance of light, colors, and shade help clear your mind because everything is as it seems. There is nothing hidden by shadows or direct light in your eyes.

So get out there for at least 30 minutes (in the morning preferably). Walk, Jog, or Run...whatever you choose...but get moving.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

Good Morning,

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 8: Be An Early Riser!

You've heard that old saying that goes "The early bird gets the worm."  That really is no better quote that pushes the need to be an early riser. After a restful night's sleep your mind is ready to go. You are at your sharpest. So why not use that to your advantage?

Get up a little early (oh heck, go all the way and wake up an hour early). Remember, during that time your adversary or competitor may be listening intently to the talking head's on TV to catch on the latest, overnight celebrity gossip, you are working diligently to set a positive tone for your entire day.

To get the worm (the positive tone for the day) do what works for you!

Write, Draw, Color, Paint, Read, or whatever makes you feel good. Take about 60 minutes and dedicate the entire time to that one activity and do it every day. Once you have made it a habit, you will wonder how you lived so long without doing this simple yet, life altering, activity.

A dose of reality: I know that I feel terrible on those days that I do not do my 1 hour of dedicated me time. It has become part of my day and I am now at a point that I feel lost when I don't take just a few minutes, let alone the whole hour.  Give it a try and you might never go back to living without doing it.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

Thank you,

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 7: Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

Every day we have to do the things we don't want to do because there is something about the task that irritates us. This irritation can as simple as a mosquito buzzing around or the lawn mower next door or some jerk driving like a maniac. Remember, there are some things that are just NOT worth it. Swat the mosquito, remember the yard next door is only so big, and just pull over at the next convenience store and take a break.

You don't have to put up with the attitude that dealing with small stuff will give you. You control how you feel. Feel better knowing that you don't have to be irritated by the small stuff and once you start believing and living that fact the big stuff won't be as bad.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 6: SMILE! :)

Did you know that when you smile your brain releases a very power drug into your system? That drug is actually a hormone known as Serotonin. Serotonin has long been thought to be a major contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness in a human being.  There ya go free happy drug that your body makes itself and self-administers all because of a smile.

Sounds like good enough reason to go and Smile! SMILE A LOT!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 5: Start A Conversation With Someone New

We have all seen YouTube videos of people falling off the sidewalk, into fountains, down stairs because their phones have all their attention. We have become a society that would rather interact with strangers on the small screen rather than look someone in the eye and say "Hello!" We are continued to ignore the real world and live in the virtual world.

Of course, everyone is suspect of everyone else. The media and those Lifetime Movies of the Week have certainly changed the way we physically interact with other human beings. If Lifetime had it their way, ALL strangers are out to either steal our money, our spouses, our children or our very own lives. Don't get me started on what the media has done to us.

Put that aside and the next time you are at the Coffee Shop, in line at Target, at the Bookstore, or anywhere that you might be or heck even right now. Look to the first person you see and start a conversation. Who knows you might just end up making a new friend and maybe change the way you feel about the real world by giving up just a little of the virtual world.

Hello, My Name is Dave Guerra. How Are You?

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 4: Think Positive!

For those that have been negative thinkers this is probably one of the most difficult things to change. With a little practice, it should not be an issue.

Now don't be fooled and I am not going to fool you...Negative Thinkers are a dime a dozen. I can look at my email contact list or my cell phone contact list and find at least two negative thinkers with the first few scrolls of the screen. I don't surround myself solely with Negative Thinkers but they do creep into our lives because we need them and they need us: typically professionally but we also get them socially.

Don't despair, negativity is essential to living. It keeps us grounded and helps us to not live with our head in the clouds. However, making negativity the only motivation in your life is not healthy. It is not good for your Blood Pressure as the stress of negativity will contribute to increasing it. It is not good for your weight as the only comfort you get is immediate when good tasting food becomes the only thing you feel you have control over that is good. Rest assured your ever increasing weight will start making you feel bad.

So how to make the change from negative to neutral or positive?
First recognize that you have to have negativity in your life. Know that it does NOT have to consume you. Know that you can control it and that you can change the negative to positive (or at least to a neutral stance). Once you recognize that the negative is starting to creep in to your life, nip it! Nip it in the bud! In the bud, I say!

Seriously, if you want to be know for something other than being a "Negative Nelly" then it is time to change your thinking. It won't be easy but it can be done and who knows, you might just end up surprising a few people.

Thanks,
-Dave Guerra
