KNOWING YOURSELF, LEADING OTHERS | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (April 29, 2014)

It's that time of the week again. That's right this past Tuesday night and every Tuesday evening from 8PM to 9PM EST, I participate in the #LeadFromWithin tweetchat hosted and led by Lolly Daskal, author of "Thoughts Spoken From the Heart: Over 500 thoughts that bring meaning to your life"

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening.

On the evening of TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2014 the topic was "KNOWING YOURSELF, LEADING OTHERS"

Here are Lolly's question and my answers.

Q1. How are you preparing to know yourself so you can lead others? #leadfromwithin
A1. Knowing yourself is a lifelong process. Always be honest with yourself #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: You should always be working to know what you do, what you know, what you need to know, and what you need to do to be a better person. Do this everyday!
_____
Q2. How does a leader convey their vision? #leadfromwithin
A2. Leaders convey their vision by living their vision (without fail) #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Another one that you cannot do sometimes. You have to be living your vision ALL the time. The moment you stop is the moment you will be discovered.
_____
Q3. Why is it so important for leaders to have core values? #leadfromwithin
A3. Core Values are like magnets that attract the people that want to be near you, led by you, & followed by you #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: It is those core values that will make you a success or a complete failure.
_____
Q4. What are the talents, qualities that you possess that most enable you to lead? #leadfromwithin
A4. Expect honesty and no pulled punches from anyone because I am honest, pull no punches, and not afraid to get in the trenches #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: You have to set the standard early on as a leader and people will respect that.
_____
Q5. What is one thing you should do more of or one thing you should do less of? #leadfromwithin
A5. MORE: Openness LESS: Shy (yes I am shy until you get to know me) #Leadfromwithin
COMMENT: -nothing to add-
_____
Q6. Why should anyone be led by you? #leadfromwithin
A6. They should feel & know that I won’t intentionally lead them down wrong path. If I do they should also know we’ll get back on right one #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Life happens and when what we think is the right path turns out to be the wrong one, it is a leader's responsibility to get everyone back on track.
_____
Q7. What is some of the key leadership lessons you would want to pass along to others? #leadfromwithin
A7. Embrace Fear (it makes you stronger) Accept Change (it makes you flexible) Keep Moving (Movement is Life) #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: There are plenty of leadership lessons to be taught but these make my top three.
_____
Q8. What would you like to ask other leaders when you get the chance? #leadfromwithin
A8. How often do you go to the your org’s frontlines (ALL FRONTLINES not just your of section/dept/team) #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Walking around the organization (the entire organization) is the best way to grow as a leader. You get to be around people you lead and those that want to be led by you. Turn them all into allies.
_____
Q9. If you could ask for help from the leaders in this group what would it be? #leadfromwithin
A9. I would ask for help in mentoring. We always need mentors #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Mentors, people who help us on our journey is always a good thing. The sad reality is that there are not enough mentors in the world.
_____
Q10. How will you measure your life? #leadfromwithin
A10. Knowing others benefit from what I taught them is a measure in itself. That is why I will teach until my last breath #Leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: We will never be able to measure our lives. We can say what things are like now but not when we are gone. Thus, the only true measure is just how much of our knowledge and insight is passed along to others. If we pass it along and it sticks then we have created a legacy. If we pass it along and it is caste to the wayside that means we must try harder before it is too late.

The 5 Things I Learned Last Week (week ending Frilday, April 25, 2014)

Here are the 5 Things I Learned This Week.

•  Give Credit where and when credit is due. ALWAYS GIVE CREDIT. If you ever fail to give that credit you will be found out as a fraud, a liar, a poser. Remember, the truth always comes out.

• Sometimes, the only way people know how to express gratitude is by paying you. Take it. No questions asked and buy something cool for your organization.

• Know your limits when it comes to performing your job. What I mean by that this is, ALWAYS be truthful to the customer and tell them that you cannot do the job. Then find them someone who can do it. This then creates a bond with that customer. Why? They know that they can trust you do their job, the right way. Who knows they might just come back the very next day and give you work. It's true it happened to me this week.

• It still surprises me that people will come back into your business life time and time again looking to be part of the team. Then when they are given the opportunity to be part of the team they are blow it away. They refuse to work and then refuse to show up. Seriously, why do people want to waste their time playing these nonsense games. Then again, why ruin any future chance with the company by misleading the organization? Some things I may never understand.

• It is critical that everyone understands your organization's mission and vision. If you have to draw a picture and explain it using 3rd grade reading level words then you will have to do that. Your organization's mission and vision is just that important. Your staff are that important, as well.

Well those are just five of the things I learned this week. What did you learn?

Dave Guerra

About Giving Out Other People's PERSONAL Cell Phone Number (and a video)

Last week, I published a small video about giving out other people's personal cell phone number.

I know it is all about NETWORKING and making new long lasting contacts and connections. I get that. I also don't get that there are still plenty of individuals that refuse to use a little common courtesy and common sense when it comes to sharing phone numbers, personal phone numbers.

If you are entrusted with someone's phone number then do NOT do anything that will compromise that trust.

How do you not compromise that trust?
You ask for permission to give out the number. If you cannot get an immediate answer then ask the person you are giving the number to for their number. Ask them if you can give their number to the person you want them to talk to. Then leave a message with the name, phone number, and why you think they will make a good connection.

Is that all?
No. You follow up to ensure that the person with the phone number, that was entrusted to you, got the message and makes the contact. However, do not cram it down their throat. One follow-up is enough. Remember, they are adults (provided you are dealing with adults) and you cannot make anyone dial the phone. All you can do is initiate the contact.

The next time, you are tempted to share a phone number ask for permission, first!

SETTING OUR PRIORITIES | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (April 22, 2014)

By now you know, every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9pm EST, I participate in a Tweetchat with consultant, coach, speaker, founder of Lead From Within  a global coaching and consultant company, and author of  "Thoughts Spoken From The Heart" Lolly Daskal.

The #LeadFromWithin tweetchats are insightful, thought provoking, and generate genuine conversation. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Twitter members join the conversation every Tuesday night. You should join us and if you are already following the #LeadFromWithin tweetchats then you know.

Each week, it is a different topic. Over the course of the hour our host, Lolly Daskal, will post 10 questions related to the topic. Every question ends with the hashtag #LeadFromWithin.

Every tweetchat participant is encouraged to respond to each of the questions. The responses are DISTINCTIVE, DISCERNING, and INTRIGUING!  You have to read them (well, as many as you can) as they go flying by on your Twitter feed.

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening for the tweetchat and throughout the week be on the lookout for the Twitter hashtag #LeadFromWithin

On the evening of Tuesday, April 22, 2014, the topic was “Setting Our Priorities”

Here are the Questions and my Answers. Enjoy!

Q1. How do we decide what is a priority in life and work? #Leadfromwithin
A1. We decide on our priorities because of plenty of trial and error! #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: We have to work through our adult life by the mistakes we make and the success we achieve. It is through this that we learn to do what works and to stay away from what does not work. That is how I see we decide what to prioritize. For example, if we like spending time with the family and we like what happens when we do then we will seek out how to make it happen more often.

-----
Q2. What are personal motivators for setting priorities? #leadfromwithin
A2. Completing something we started. Today, my son completed the million-word challenge at school. He is on top of the world tonight #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Completing any objective is the greatest motivator for setting priorities. By meeting our goals and objectives we feel good. We feel good and to continue feeling good we do what we have to to ensure that achieve the new goals and objectives.

-----
Q3. What are some differences between the priorities we espouse and those we actually do? #leadfromwithin
A3. There should be no difference. We must always walk the talk. We can deviate (that’s called life) but never stray too far #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: The moment we stop espousing about what we actually do and take on the the do as I say not as I do mentality your credibility is shot. Yes, it is that simple.

-----
Q4. How can we improve our focus and concentration? #leadfromwithin
A4. Provide an environment that is conducive to actively listening to ourselves (i.e. quiet place, time, etc.) #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Any place that you can set aside as your place is enough. Once there, you start working on actively listening to yourself. Work past the clutter and start to focus your mind on thing at a time them things will start to fall in place.

-----
Q5 How can we beat procrastination? #leadfromwithin
A5. Procrastination is always nipping at your heels. Try to stay one-step ahead and you’ll be good to go. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Keep moving. Now don't move for the sake of moving and staying active. Keep moving because you have something to do and it needs to get done.

-----
Q6. What are some ways we can take back control of our day? #leadfromwithin
A6. We can take back control by ensuring others understand you need to not be at the mercy of their whims, wants, excuses #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: People are finicky and it is their finickiness that will drain you. That is if you allow their finickiness to happen. Start by setting the rules, standards, and expectations can you begin to maintain control of your day.

-----
Q7. What happens when leaders don’t align with our priorities? #leadfromwithin
A7. Time to get re-aligned or time to find a leader that is aligned. It’s OK to seek out those who are like us #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: When you are not aligned with others that OK. We are all different and rightly so. There are times and places when we should align with others such as at work. At work, the priorities of keeping the mission and vision in focus is critical, no, it is mission critical. However, when the leaders don't align with our priorities it is perfectly acceptable to seek out other leaders within the organization that are aligned with us. There will be times that we will have to look beyond the organization to find those with the priorities that are focused on the mission and vision that we like.

-----
Q8. What are the best ways leaders can organize their life? #leadfromwithin
A8. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate (Yes. it is that simple) A good two-way conversation is the ticket #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: What more can I say about this? Really, I could say more but then again isn't that the point?

-----
Q9. What obstacles block our priorities? #leadfromwithin
A9. We're our own greatest obstacle. When we overcome our insecurities & self-doubts nothing can block our path to greatness #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: We truly are our own worst enemy. For whatever, fear or insecurity many of us stop just short of fulfilling our greatness. We sabotage our success by any number of ways. However, with a little practice and self-determination we can stop the sabotage and overcome those self-imposed obstacles.

-----
Q10. When was the last time you accomplished a personal dream? #leadfromwithin
A10. Worked with my son to help him accomplish the Million-word reading challenge this school year. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: My 8 year old son, my wife, daughter and I all worked together to make his goal a reality. It became a personal dream faster than you can imagine. Then since September we have been reading and reading to help motivate him and now on April 22 he read over 1 million words. He met his goal because he understood what the priorities were and what they will be to repeat it again next year. As you can tell I am a proud Dad.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be ZANY

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE ZANY.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for cZany (the C is silent).

Last piece of advice for the ABCs of 2014 is to ALWAYS BE ZANY.

That's right! Be Zany.

As a leader, you expect people to take you seriously and you know you have to take yourself seriously.

However, you don't have to be so serious that you start to lose touch with the little things in life. Don't be so serious that you forget how to have fun.

Schedule time to do something amusingly unconventional and idiosyncratic, something zany. Yes! make being zany part of your weekly (better yet, daily) calendar.

Take a break and do something unexpected and fun. Do that and people will recognize you as a well-rounded individual and leader. That is a very good thing.

NOTE: we're done with the ABCs of 2014 but I am NOT done with pursuing leadership one step at a time. I am not done. Not by a long shot!

LEADING DISPERSED TEAMS | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (April 15, 2014)

Every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9pm EST, I participate in a Tweetchat with Consultant, Coach, Speaker, Founder of #LeadFromWithin, and Author of  "Thoughts Spoken From The Heart" Lolly Daskal.

The #LeadFromWithin Tweetchats are insightful, thought provoking, and generate genuine conversation. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Twitter members join the conversation every Tuesday night. You should join us and if you are already following the #LeadFromWithin tweetchats then you know.

Every tweetchat participant is encouraged to respond to each of the questions. The responses are UNIQUE, INSIGHTFUL, and INSPIRING!  You have to read them (well, as many as you can) as they go flying by on your Twitter feed.

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening for the tweetchat and throughout the week be on the lookout for the Twitter hashtag #LeadFromWithin

On the evening of Tuesday, April 15, 2014, the topic was “Leading Dispersed Teams”

Here are the Questions and my Answers. Enjoy!

Q1. What is a dispersed team? #leadfromwithin
A1. Group of individuals with same objective operating together but from various locations (down the hall/across the planet) #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: A dispersed team does not have to be across the country to be dispersed. They could be down the hall or two buildings away. No matter the distance, the issue is that the team members are part of a team and must work to achieve that common goal.

-----
Q2. What are the challenges with a dispersed team? #leadfromwithin
A2. Lack of crystal clear communication. Misinterpretations and Miscommunication can run rampant #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: The biggest challenge is also the easiest to overcome. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively is a must for not just the leader but every member of the team.

-----
Q3. Identify some strategies for managing dispersed teams? #leadfromwithin
A3. Site visits (works for Starbucks), secret shoppers, on-demand video conferencing (open door policy) #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: The leader needs to show up where the team members are. Yes, it means travel and yes it means taking the time to shake their hand. Yes, this strategy is worth it. If you have an open door policy in the office, then shouldn't that same opportunity apply to the remote team members? Have a web cam attached to your PC to have those desktop-to-desktop video conferences. Think outside the box if you have to but ensure that they know you are there for them no matter where they are.

-----
Q4. What elements do team members have to have in a dispersed team? #leadfromwithin
A4. Able to deal with "last to know" syndrome and able to stay on task with minimal supervision #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Team members have to be flexible in all aspects of working as part of a dispersed team. They also have to accept the fact that there will be some inherent difficulties with being part of a dispersed team. These difficulties can be overcome but not before they become an inconvenience before those issues can be addressed.

-----
Q5. Why is team’s purpose important for dispersed teams? #leadfromwithin
A5. It helps keep all team working on the “same sheet of music” #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Keeping the focus of the mission and vision of the team is essential to achieving the goals of the team no matter where they are. Therefore, as the leader it behooves you to ensure that those you lead are completely aware of the vision and mission of the team.

-----
Q6. How does trust play into dispersed teams? #leadfromwithin
A6. It is all about trust. If there is no trust then why bother creating dispersed teams #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: There can be no doubt that you trust your people. There can be no misunderstanding as to the amount of trust you place in the people you are dealing with. Lastly, if the trust is broken you might have to rebuild that trust from scratch. So never let the trust falter.

-----
Q7. If Feedback is important how should feedback be articulated in a dispersed team? #leadfromwithin
A7. The articulation of feedback should be done with pulling absolutely no punches. No sugar coating as well. #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Feedback has to be honest and genuine. Distance should never be an excuse for half-assing the comments, feedback, or concern. Distance is a factor only by those that want to make it a factor.

-----
Q8. To make a dispersed team feel like a connected team you need to? #leadfromwithin
A8. A connected team needs only one thing: to feel that they belong. #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Every team member, no matter where or who they are, must know that they are valued and that they belong with the team. This is an unfortunate by-product of a dispersed team. They start to doubt that they are being kept in the loop. So go out of your way to ensure that all members know and understand just how much they are valued and most certainly belong on the team.

-----
Q9. How is leading a dispersed team different from leading a team where all members in the same location? #leadfromwithin
A9. There should be no difference, aside from travel to site(s). Treat them the same and hold accountable the same way. #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: Leading a dispersed team should never be different than when you lead a team in the same building. Changing the way you do business with dispersed teams will mean that you have to run two different teams and that is NOT a good thing. You have to stay focused on one operation; one cohesive and informed operation.

-----
Q10. What kind of leader do you need to be in a dispersed team? #leadfromwithin
A10. Just Be A Leader. That's the kind of leader you need to be to lead a dispersed team. #leadfromwithin
COMMENTS: There should never be any fancy tricks, no smoke and mirrors when it comes to leading a dispersed team. Just be yourself, be a leader and the rest will take care of itself.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be YEARNING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE YEARNING.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Yearning (the C is silent).

Always Be Yearning for more. Expect More. Demand More. Give More. Get More.

You must have that yearning deep inside of you. If you don't then you are doing something wrong or being a leader isn't for you.

Remember, about being the best? Being the best leader you can be. Well, you can't be the best if all you do is think about being the best.

To be the best you have act on it.

You have to want it so bad that your every waking moment you are acting on it. Then when you get it you want more of it. You get greedy for you it. Then you are going to want it even more. That is the kind of yearning I am talking about.

Staying Focused + Staying Motivated + Staying Hungry = Always Be Yearning

GROW AND DEVELOP IN YOUR LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (April 8, 2014)

Each week, it is a different topic. Over the course of the hour our host, Lolly Daskal, will post 10 questions related to the topic. Every question ends with the hashtag #LeadFromWithin.

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening for the tweetchat and throughout the week be on the lookout for the Twitter hashtag #LeadFromWithin

On the evening of Tuesday, April 8, 2014, the topic was “Grow and Develop in your Leadership Challenges”

Here are the Questions and my Answers. Enjoy!

Q1. DEFINE challenges? #leadfromwithin
A1. Challenges are those things we see as obstacles that must be overcome. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Life is a challenge. Everything in life is here to challenge us. We have to either accept those challenges head on or we can roll over and let life pass us by. You can only take that step in the positive direction. You can only accept your challenge or deny it.

_____
Q2. What is the connection between challenges and development? #leadfromwithin
A2. Like the saying goes “what doesn’t kill us only serves to make us stronger” overcoming or trying to overcome challenges makes us better #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: You can only learn from what life hands you. You cannot give up because things have become difficult or the situation seems hopeless. You have to take all that live gives you and you process it and learn from it. Good or Bad it does not matter. What does matter is that you learn and grow from all that has happened to you and what will happen.

_____
Q3: How do you know when its time to let go or to continue holding on? #leadfromwithin
A3. We can let go when we stop expecting a different outcome after trying the same thing numerous times. #LeadFromWithin

COMMENTS: Like a moth to light bulb, you will eventually get burned. As humans we know better and eventually give up trying not to get burned and move on to a different situation. All through our lives we will keep trying to change the outcome of almost impossible situations. That's OK, so long as we don't get hung up on changing what cannot be changed or refuses to change.

_____
Q4. If we learn from mistakes why are we so afraid of making mistakes #leadfromwithin
A4. It is the fear of the unknown that makes us afraid of making mistakes. It is when we make them that we determine they weren’t so bad #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Mistakes are part of growing up. By growing up, I mean we never truly stop growing up. So we will always make mistakes. So keep making mistakes but do your darnedest to not make the same mistake twice.

_____
Q5. What does one need in time of challenge? #leadfromwithin
A5. Permission to execute and attempt to overcome the challenge. Permission can come from others but most importantly from self. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: You have to let yourself know that you expect yourself to step up and face the challenge. You have to tell yourself that running away or putting your head in the sand is not the way to go.

_____
Q6. What kind of support should we seek in times of challenge? #leadfromwithin
A6. Support should come from as many that can provide 360 degree coverage of the support (cover all bases) #LeadFromWithin

COMMENTS: If we can set up a cohesive and well-rounded support network of people you know and trust then there is no challenge that can stop you. Yes, it is that simple.

_____
Q7. Based on your current daily actions and routines where do you expect to be in five years?
A7. Having created so many more leaders than followers. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: I expect to have been either fully or partially responsible for creating more leaders than I will have made followers. That is a tall order but if everything that I have written, said, and did helps to create just one leader then it was all worth it.

_____
Q8. How does one keep balance in times of challenge? #leadfromwithin
A8. We find those that matter most and seek their ear, heart, mind and guidance. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Keeping and staying in balance is something that we must constantly work on. By having a supportive network of individuals that matter the most to us we can not only stay balanced but can get back in balance should we ever appear to be leaning to the left or right.

_____
Q9 Life is too short to tolerate _______?
A9. Life is too short to tolerate those situations, people, and things that make us uncomfortable #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: Seriously, if you are uncomfortable you cannot fully commit to the what you are dealing with or have to deal with: LIFE. State your case and move on. You do not have tolerate something (or anything) that is uncomfortable. Sure we have to deal with some discomfort in life but we do NOT have to tolerate it in the long term.

_____
Q10. What big lesson could people learn from your life? #leadfromwithin
A10. The biggest lesson I could offer is to be accepting and tolerant of others #LeadFromWithin
COMMENTS: I know it sounds a little contradictory but when it comes to dealing with people (especially new contacts) you have to go into the new relationship with openness and tolerance. However, when others show you different it is at that point that you must decide what is the best course of action to take. You can try to continue taking their nonsense or you could put  a stop your acceptance of their behavior and move on.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be VERSED

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE VERSED.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Versed (the C is silent).

It is the experienced leader that is always experienced or skilled in; knowledgeable about themselves, their organization, their employees, their own leaders, their peers, their family, their everything.

At some point in your career you will become the expert in the field. You worked hard to get there so stay there.

To Be The Man You Must Be Well Versed!
Sorry folks, there is absolutely no short cut to being a well-versed individual. Try taking the short and you will most certainly pay the price.

Don't lose focus when you are on this long journey. You will get there and when you do the reward will be well worth the effort.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be UNDERSTANDING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE UNDERSTANDING.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Understanding (the C is silent).

One of the greatest leadership traits is to be understanding. However, do not be understanding to a fault. Showing empathy is expected of any leader. Be warned, don't let that empathy become sympathy.

Sympathy will make even the greatest leaders make terrible mistakes. I am NOT saying that you have to be cold and heartless. What I am saying is that while you have a business to run you also have people that look up to you and go to you when they need something.

Give them a reason to continue doing so but also give them reason to not abuse it. Be Smart about it.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be TRAINING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE TRAINING.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Training (the C is silent).

You can never stop training. Life is one teachable moment after another.

Train, train, train.

In the Army, we had a saying that still use today. Well actually two sayings:

"If it's raining, we're training."

"If it's not raining then we're training."

Teach them what you know. Then when you have done that, go learn something else then teach them that.

ABCs of 2014: Always Be SMART

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE SMART.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Smart (the C is silent).

Be Smart. Not the kind of smart that is a sharp, stinging pain.

I mean be the kind of smart that deals with intelligence.  Be smart in the sense that people will know that you can deliver the right answer even if is not the popular answer.

Yeah, that's it. Be smart enough to know that people MUST hear the right answer, even if it is not what they want to hear.

If has got to be said, then say it!

That's the smart thing to do.

Dave Guerra

ABCs of 2014: Always Be READING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE READING.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Reading (the C is silent).

Never ever stop reading. A leader is always reading. A leader should never be more than one arm's length away from a book.

What kind of book should she be reading?

Some will say leadership books. Others might say, biographies of other leaders. Still others might say read business book that focus on your industry. That's all fine and dandy.

I say: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY SAY!

I say read what you like. Read whatever tickles your fancy. Read to Read!

Trust me on this: The more you read, the more you will want to read. The more the hunger for reading will increase. READ! READ! & READ!

As you read, your horizons will expand and your hunger will slowly start to creep into other genre of books. Who knows you might even ready my books one day?

So what are you reading now?

Thank you,
Dave Guerra

ABCs of 2014: Always Be QUICK

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE QUICK.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Quick (the C is silent).

Always being quick is another one of those leadership traits that people are always on the lookout for. People expect to see a leader that is quick acting, quick response, and quick decision maker.

However, a leader should also take caution and not be too quick. Too quick to reach a decision (which could later turn out to be a hasty decision).

The ability to distinguish between quick and hasty comes with experience and knowledge. Be careful and do not try to rush this process. It will happen when it happens.

As you grow as a leader you will notice that your decision making skills will increase and be the right decision at the right time for the right reason.

In the meantime, work on always being quick!

Dave Guerra

ABCs of 2014: Always Be OBSERVING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE OBSERVING.
A for Always, B for Be, and C for Observing (the C is silent).

Keeping your eyes open and observing the world around you is one of those critical leadership skills that cannot go unused.

By being observant you can see what's on the horizon. You can see what is behind you. You can see what is to right and left of you.

Don't get me wrong, I know you don't have eyes in the back of your head, like mom does. I am referring to the fact that as a leader, you must always be looking all around you. Also, look at the present, plan for the future and refer to the past.

(IMPORTANT: Notice I wrote REFER to the past. Be careful not to get bogged down and start to dwell on the past. You are to only use the past as a point of reference.)

By Always Being Observing you will be better prepared to handle the good times and the bad times. You will be able to anticipate when to step to the right or dodge to left or when to pick up the pace and when to slow down. Now, that's a good thing.

CREATING GENUINE LEADERSHIP IMAGE | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (April 1, 2014)

Each week, it is a different topic. Over the course of the hour our host, Lolly Daskal, will post 10 questions related to the topic. Every question ends with the hashtag #LeadFromWithin.

Every tweetchat participant is encouraged to respond to each of the questions.

On the evening of Tuesday, April 1, 2014, the topic was “Creating Genuine Leadership Image”

Here are the Questions and my Answers. Enjoy!

Q1. What is a genuine image? #leadfromwithin
A1. Genuine image is the first impression. It could be the original WYSIWYG so make it good and real #LeadFromWithin
Comment: The first impression is the genuine image of an individual. There is some give when a bad first impression is made but for the most part as I wrote what you see is what you get. There is very little wiggle room when the bad impressions continue. It is best not to go into any situation that you are not giving it your best.

-----
Q2. Who should work on creating their image? #leadfromwithin
A2. Everyone. Always. Never stop creating it #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Everyone must work on creating their genuine leadership image. Then re- creating it, then creating it again. Never stop creating your image. The ability for a leader to remain fluid and dynamic then the leader can adapt to change.

-----
Q3. Should leaders take control over their image and why? #leadfromwithin
A3. Leaders/Everyone should always be in control over their image. Doing so separates fact from fiction/truth from rumors #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Having and maintaining control over your image is critical. Sure, you can hire people to manage it but in the end it is up to you to stay in control.

-----
Q4. What requirements do you need to create an image? #leadfromwithin
A4. Only one requirement that matters: Truth. Have that and the rest falls right in place. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: If you are truthful to yourself and those that see you as leader then you should have no problem creating and sustain that image.

-----
Q5. How does image effect people around you? #leadfromwithin
A5. Your image will dictate just how approachable you are to them. They should feel you are receptive to them and not out of reach #LeadFromWithin
Comment: If you have an image that projects a sense of being aloof, cold, and distant then you better get used to being treated like you are aloof, cold, and distant. Seriously, it is that simple. If you project an open and welcoming image then you will get plenty of open and welcoming interactions (HINT: That's a good thing)

-----
Q6. What are some misconceptions of creating an image? #leadfromwithin
A6. Misconception #1 is that it is all about ME, ME, ME. If done right, it is all about US & WE. So do it right #LeadFromWithin
Comment: While it may be difficult the image that you create cannot be all about you. As a leader, your objective is to create more leaders. That means you have to have an image that people want to emulate. Fail to do that, then you failed.

-----
Q7. How do you close the gap from who you are to who you want to be? #leadfromwithin
A7. One thing is to obtain feedback from those near and far from you. Then use the feedback to create yourself. Feedback serves to help you grow #LeadFromWithin
Comment: How do you know you are on the right course on a hiking trip? You check the map. If you are off by a few degrees then you shoot a new azimuth, adjust your route, and get back on track.

Obtaining feedback is just like checking the map. Authentic feedback (good and bad) when genuinely accepted will get you back on track to creating the image you always wanted.

-----
Q8. What are some image busters? #leadfromwithin
A8. Not being genuine from the start is THE image buster. The truth always comes out. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Be genuine and there is nothing that can bust your image. Playing both sides against each other (or yourself) is the quickest way I know to break your image into million tiny little pieces.

-----
Q9. How can you assess your own image? #leadfromwithin
A9. Are you truly comfortable with the image you created? If not, then fix it. If you are, then make it better #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Remember, when I mentioned feedback? Well, this applies here as well. If you find yourself not comfortable with something you have done with your image then it is not too late! Change it! Feedback is a great tool to help you determine what exactly needs to change and what form the change should take. So listen to yourself (and others).

-----
Q10. What three words would you use to describe your leadership image? #leadfromwithin
A10. Learning. Sharing. Compassion. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Of course, there are more words to describe ourselves. More than likely if you were ask me on Thursday morning as opposed to Tuesday evening the words would more than likely be different. This is because I really believe that a leader has to stay dynamic, fluid, always in motion. However, each leader has his or her own base that we do not deviate far from. It is just who we are.
