100 Days, 100 Ways Day 60: Help Yourself By Helping Others

There are countless reasons why HELPING OTHERS has a long, deep, and far reaching ripple effect! Did you know that helping others also helps you. Yep, you help yourself every time you help others.

You help yourself by feeling good about yourself, your SELF-ESTEEM gets a big boost. Your interpersonal relationship skills get better. You open yourself up to be trusted and you trust others. Strangers become Friends. All of those are good feelings, good emotions, a good way to live.

So grab yourself a hammer, a pen, or a hand and go HELP SOMEONE.

Who knows the person you help today may be the very same person that will help you later?

Thanks, Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 59: Grow from Your Mistakes

We all mistakes. We are made of mistakes. Our lives are full of mistakes and will contain many, many more mistakes.

Our future will be determined by our mistakes. There are ONLY two paths that we can take when it comes to the future. 1) We can continue to make mistakes we have made in the past or 2) we can learn and grow from the mistakes and do what it takes to avoid them from happening again.

Really! Only two paths to take.

It is that simple: Let the mistake happen, Admit to the mistake, Recognize and Understand what happened and why.

Then when you find yourself in that situation again you can act in way that will not yield the same return/response thus making the mistake is avoided. That's how you grow as an individual from your mistakes.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 58: Read “Art of Peace” by Morihei Ueshiba

Pacifist...Antagonist...Liberal...Conservative...Soldier...Civilian... It doesn't matter, just read “Art of Peace” by Morihei Ueshiba.

This book is NOT the opposite of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Quite the contrary, it complements Sun Tzu. By the same token, Art of War complements Art of Peace. Though written many years apart the go well together. They are the perfect example of the "Yin" and the "Yang" in their ability to co-exist in way that the balance that Art of Peace and Art of War bring to the individual is something that cannot be explain but it can be experienced.

The Art of Peace deals with our inner conflicts and how to resolve them. How to live with a new, refined you. If change is what you truly seek, then this book is another to include in your library of growth and change.

 The following is an excerpt:
"The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose than to realize your inner divinity and manifest your innate enlightenment. Foster peace in your own life and then apply the Art to all that you encounter."

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 56: Read “Art of War” by Sun Tzu

Pacifist...Antagonist...Liberal...Conservative...Soldier...Civilian... It doesn't matter, read “Art of War” by Sun Tzu. This book has been read all over the world, by a wide variety of people. Of course, you don't have to be studying war to read this book. The Art of War has "had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond" thus making this book suitable for just about anyone.

The following excerpt best describes why the Art of War is important:
“Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: The Moral Law; Heaven; Earth; The Commander; Method and discipline.”

You can get your own copy at your local book store or you can visit the following:

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 53: Leave Your Comfort Zone

I know I have touch on this subject (usually as part of another subject) in the past. It is such a great topic that it deserves a day all to itself.

Leaving your comfort zone is something that many of us HAVE TO do when we change jobs, change schools, change relationships.

Rarely is leaving our COMFORT ZONE something we do because we CHOOSE TO do.

You know Eleanor Roosevelt (the President's wife) is credited to have said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.

Talk about leaving your comfort zone. EVERY DAY and be sure that whatever you do that it SCARES YOU!

Now that's SERIOUS.

Leaving the comfort zone on a consistent and deliberate basis has its benefits. It helps lessen your anxiety to change whether it is expected or unexpected. Stepping outside your comfort zone EXPOSES you to new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new ways of seeing things from a different perspective.

Who doesn't like seeing things from a new point of view or experiencing something new and exciting? Now, I am not saying that you should go out and jump from a balloon that's 24 miles up in the sky but what I am saying is do something that will at least challenge you.

Before you know it, your comfort zone will be so large that it may eventually be impossible to step out of.

Now, get out there and DO SOMETHING.

Talk to you soon,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 52: Drink H2O (and lots of it)

Drink Plenty of Water.

All around you a $12 Billion/year industry knows what is good for you. Those $12 Billion come from the bottled water sales. That's a lot of High Quality H20.

The human body is over 70% water. The human brain consists of  over 70%, as well. There is no mention of Dr. Pepper being an essential part of keeping the body hydrated. Diet Coke..uh, well...just forget it there ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE. Oh sure, Dr. Pepper ® and Diet Coke ® have water in it, but the sugars and other artificial chemicals completely NEGATE the benefits the water in the soft drink may have.

Some where between 8 to 10 cups of water every day should do you nicely. It should keep you hydrated enough to keep all your bodily systems operating nominally and in a healthy state.

Put that Dr. Pepper® back in the refrigerator case and instead pour yourself a tall cool glass of H20 (water) and enjoy.

Cheers,Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 50: Be Charismatic

Having a charismatic personality is something that many want, few achieve, and even less to maintain.

You've seen that person all your life. They are always surrounded by people and sometimes they are the life of the party (even if its your party). What??? Someone else is the life of your party? Why not you? If you are the host of the party, you MUST be the life of the party. Seriously, why hand that power over to someone else?

Come on, do you really like being behind the scenes? No...No one does!

Start doing something to change all that. Take your party back and be the life of the party.

Here are a few things you can do now (remember start off small and BE PATIENT):
       • Read today's newspaper
       • Read the latest bestseller novel
       • Join a public speaking group (i.e., Toastmasters)
       • Learn a little magic
       • Learn a card trick or two (or three or more)

All of these will give you a little confidence that you can cultivate and grow. With all that confidence you are sure to take your rightful place: the life of your party.

However, something to think about: If you have the confidence to learn a parlor trick or two or join Toastmasters or something (anything) that puts you outside of your comfort zone then you already have all the confidence you need (but a little more doesn't hurt).

Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 49: Befriend Coworkers

Expand your internal network by making friends with your co-workers. However, don't overdo it. It may be easy to get started, it is even easier to get carried away. While it is not a problem to socialize with your co-workers, it can become a problem when you become a supervisor. Show a little restraint now and you will thank yourself later.

Make friends now and they can become your strongest allies later. Show genuine and authentic friendship and you might just make someone a lifelong friend

Give it a shot

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 48: Home Is To Stay At Home

There is something that can be said about the individual that can leave WORK at WORK when the whistle blows 5 o'clock and can also leave HOME at HOME when the whistle blows in the morning.

Imagine being able to turn off all your at home worries and solely focus on the job at hand?
Imagine being able to turn off all the day's events and have a restful and peaceful evening at home with your family?

SOUND FAMILIAR?

It should because it's what I wrote yesterday. Now let's flip yesterday's post on the B-side and look at it from the perspective of work.

When you were hired, you were hired to do a job for your employer who would in turn give you compensation for doing that job. A reality is that many of us bring our home into the workplace. We take calls from our kids, emails from friends, and so on.

So what do you do? You curtail your interactions. Notice I wrote curtail and not completely cut off your interactions. In a tight economy everyone must do more with less and that means that your employer is going to expect you to do more of your job and less socializing, less time spent off the job when you are supposed to be on the job.

This might sound harsh but understand in an economy that is taking no prisoners there is no room for slacking off or the perception of slacking off.

That's why you must enlist the help of your friends and family to get them to support you in keeping the calls and distractions down to a minimum.

Emergencies are understandable and expected. That's life but living in a constant state of Emergency is not understandable and definitely NOT expected nor tolerated by the employer. So do what you can now otherwise it may be too late.

Now, get back to work.

Thanks,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 47: Work Is To Stay At Work

There is something that can be said about the individual that can leave WORK at WORK when the whistle blows 5 o'clock and can also leave HOME at HOME when the whistle blows in the morning.

Imagine being able to turn off all your at home worries and solely focus on the job at hand?
Imagine being able to turn off all the day's events and have a restful and peaceful evening at home with your family?

Some say that because of this age that we live in. The ALWAYS ON, ALWAYS CONNECTED 24/7 world we cannot break the electronic chains that tie us to work in the evenings and by the same token those chains that tie us to family during the day. It is because of the stress of always being connected that it is essential to have a place where you can go to escape the workplace.

To minimize the stress make home a WORK FREE ZONE (WFZ). The WFZ is where you will not check your work email every half hour. You will not do work from work for the sake of doing the work. You will not answer a work phone call because the phone is ringing. Guess what? That's why they invented voicemail and that's why people play "phone tag" so let the call go to voicemail and get with them later.

In the meantime, enjoy the time with your family.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 46: Reflect

Over the past 45 days, there have been plenty ideas, concepts and so much more to think about. Just like life, things come at you 100 mph. Every once in a while, it is a great idea to put the parking brakes on and sit idle for a bit. During that "idle" time you are to REFLECT on all that has happened up until this point.

Word of Warning:  Don't idle so long that your "engine" overheats

Sit "idle" long enough to:
     • Absorb all that has happened
     • Understand what has happened and why
     • Plan your next move / Chart your course
     • Execute

This is not like daily meditation in that you clear your mind. No, this time to actively reflect is for when you really want to go over the things that have recently happened and to contemplate on how and where you want your life to go from this point on.

As I wrote, don't take too long to execute because whether you want to believe it or not stuff is already happening, decisions have been made, and the plans of others are being executed as you read this. So don't let it overtake you and pass you by. The last thing you want to do is spin your wheels while you are trying to get up to speed.

Thanks,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 44: Eye Contact

Make and Keep Eye Contact. People want to know that someone is paying attention and there is no better way to show that you are paying than to look someone in the eye. Make and Keep Eye Contact. Don't be distracted by the Television, the Computer monitor, your phone, a car passing by, and for Pete's sake do not be distracted by the shiny object(s) hanging off a gold chain.

Keep the distractions to a minimum. No matter how shiny and bright and big the object hanging off the chain is do not be seduced by the distraction.

What if they do not make eye contact with you?

Don't worry, you just keep making eye contact. Eventually, they'll get it. Remember, the eyes will also tell you what they are thinking and wanting to do. You can then adjust the conversation to move to your advantage, if not then you will at least be prepared for anything that comes up in the conversation.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 43: Is That Your First Impression?

Remember, you only get ONE shot at a First Impression! So you have got to make it the best first impression you can. There is NO second chance there is NO half-assed good first impression. There is ONLY a Good or Bad first impression.

The sooner you accept that fact the sooner you can start to work on making a good first impression the first time EVERY TIME!

So how do you go about making a good first impression?

It is quite simple.
       1. Firm and strong handshake. No one likes shaking a wet noodle. Also, don't overdo it and crush their hand
       2. Smile :)
       3. Introduce yourself properly. "Hello, my name is ___________. Nice to meet you."
       4. Speak loud enough to be heard. NO YELLING!!!
       5. Repeat the person's name as they tell you.
       6. When you depart say, "It was nice to meet you,<>"
If you forgot their name, that's OK. There is no shame in asking for their name again. The shame comes when you DON'T ask.

Do these six things and you will you make a good impression every time. Practice these six steps, always, and you will ALWAYS make an excellent First Impression.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 41: Learn to Strum A Six-String

Exercising the right side of the brain is something that everyone should do. The right brain is the one that works the analytical, artistic, and creativity parts of the whole mind. Your Intuition & Creativity, Differentiating Shades of Color, Processing Emotional Responses, Facial Recognition, Process and interpreting Images, and Music are all found in the right brain.

One way to keep your mind moving, growing, and always active is to pick up a "beat up six-string from a second hand store" and start strumming. Go make some music. Now I am not saying that you have to go learn to be your a "jukebox hero" but I am saying learn to play a musical instrument. My musical instruments of choice are a guitar and an electric bass. I am not musical genius but I do love getting blisters on my fingers (just kidding) but I do like the noise that comes out of the amps. Heck, sometimes it even sounds like something.

If your instrument of choice is a harmonica or a recorder so be it. Just be sure to go make beautiful music. Make Your Music. Have Fun Now and Your Mind will thank you for it later.

Ciao!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 40: Control Your Mind

Did you know, that just as we can control our emotions we can control our mind? Yes, only you can steer your train of thought into one that makes your wishes, hopes, and dreams a REALITY! Then again only you can steer your thoughts and actions down a spiral staircase into the 7 levels of hell. You, and you alone, control the direction you take in this life.

Many people believe that our lives are pre-determined, that our path in life has been laid out and set on auto-pilot and we are merely passengers on the ride from the cradle to the casket. Still many more believe that our destiny is controlled by us, the individual. There is no pre-set path. There is NO FREE RIDE!

That means that consciously and sub-consciously we must decide, ourselves, to go left or right, to zip or zag, to go up or down, to come in or go out! Obviously, all the while maintain inner harmony and peace by purging ourselves of the negative.

How to make this happen?

Back in the 60's the Beatles would have answered, "See Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and he will explain how." that is until they had a falling out but the secret was no secret. It was MEDITATION.

The trick is that there is nothing formal about clearing your mind, clearing your thoughts, and focus on you and living in the moment, this moment. Being present with the NOW and nothing else. Not to be present with your past (a.k.a. re-living your past). Not to be present with your future (the future is unwritten). To be centered and focused on the HERE and NOW.

Noted British Master of Transcendental Meditation Jonathan Rowson said, about  meditation, it offers "a feeling of serenity, energy and balance", but does not provide "any powerful insight into your own mind". Rowson's statement is true in that by creating the balance you can then proceed with moving your mind forward without clutter and with pure intent.

The negative thoughts and actions are what create the clutter in that your good thoughts and deeds are in a daily struggle against the negative. It is up to you to do what you must do to grow as an individual. Give daily meditation a shot, it will help in learning to control your mind.

Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 39: Nip Your Tech Addiction in the Bud

Right now, how far are you from your cellphone? If you are more than arm's length away from your phone you are in the minority. Most of us, have some sort of smartphone that is within quick reach. The same probably goes for your iPad, Android Tablet, Laptop, and PC or any combination thereof.

We give those devices a lot of power over our lives. We check-in, we pin, we like, we post, and we upload and download sometimes numerous times over the course of a couple of minutes. Then again, that small device at the end of our arm is our gateway to the world. Within a few swipes across the screen and almost instantly our Facebook Friends will know what we are doing, where we are, and who we are with. The ability to let people, half-way around the planet, know that we are taking a Pumpkin Spice Latte break is a miracle of modern society. When those friends like the coffee break our ego is fed so we look for the next thing to post so that they can like it and so on.

Now, when that ego feeding gets to the point that it consumes and diverts the individual from what he must do then it is time to change things up before they really get out of control. It may be time to start cutting the cord that attaches us to our PC, Laptop, iPhone, Android tablet, etc., etc.

Many of us, yours truly included, find it difficult to cut the digital umbilical cords or power cords. Talking some small steps, at first, will make the tech addiction a little easier to handle. However, by leaving your phone at home or the office the next time you go out to lunch or dinner may not seem like a big thing but as I found out, it was as if I was out in public without any clothes.

After doing this a few more times, I lost that feeling of being naked in public and now can leave the phone alone for day, on the weekend, without checking it. Of course, I set the ringer to the loudest setting so that I can hear it. Now, I have no problem being more than arm's length away without feeling any anxiety.

Try it, you'll feel better knowing that your "addiction" to technology can be overcome. So once you finish reading this post, go ahead and turn off your device and go interface with others IRL (in real life).

Thank you,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 38: Control Your Emotions

There has never been a better time to take full control of your emotions than now. Right now you are in being pulled in so many directions that sometimes, you don't know exactly how many directions. Stress levels go up, time starts slipping away and the next thing you know things get out of control, to include your emotions.

One thing that many of us forget is that we are the master of our fate, control our destiny. We hold our future in the palm of our hands. However, when we let emotions get out of hand we lose control of ourselves and we hand our power over to someone else. Now someone will control us and our emotions. Once you give it away it is so hard to take back. So don't do it.

Easier said than done, right? It is easy because you are the ONLY person that has the power to make you happy and to make you unhappy. That's right NOT your neighbor, not your spouse, not your family, and definitely not your friends.

ONLY YOU!!!

You have the luxury to pick and choose when and what will rattle your cage and what will not. Always remember this cold hard fact the next time you are surrounded by negativity, by those that would rather see you miserable more than anything else in the world. Remember, that you have the power and no one else will unless you decide to give it away.

Act on the knowledge that you control your emotions and NO ONE else does. While it may be a little difficult at first, however, after deliberate attempts to remember and act, you will soon stop giving your emotions and (ultimately) control to others who do NOT deserve it.

Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 37: Pamper Yourself

You have to look out for Number 1. If you don't look out for yourself then how can you ever be expected to look out for your family and friends? You have to take care of yourself, NO "ands", "ifs", or "buts".

Of course, when I say "you have to take care of yourself" I don't mean you go off and neglect your duties. You are expected to continue doing what you are expected to do, sorry no slacking off here.

Taking care of yourself here means getting a pint of Ben and Jerry's and kicking your feet up or for the ladies going out and getting the full spa treatment.

Gents find yourself a barber and get the full treatment. A haircut, hot towel, and a shave. There are places that still do this. So go for it!

Taking care of yourself also means NOT to overdo it. One pint at a time. One spa treatment every three months. Doing it all the time will most certainly cause the novelty to wear off. Once the novelty wears off, the stress returns. Stress returns when you are no longer able to properly pamper yourself.

Then what will you do? Stress over finding something new to do to pamper yourself? So go easy on it the pampering.

Thank you,
Dave

A "Voyage of Self-Discovery" will ALWAYS be long and arduous. Having a Support System (Navigators) of Family and Friends that will keep you sailing forward through the storms and calm seas, is essential.

Your support system should NEVER fail you by steering you back to shore every time they get uncomfortable. What's the point of venturing out into uncharted waters? How will you ever know if there be "dragons" there? For that matter, how will you ever know to face those "dragons" on your terms? Face them now or face them later but you will face them (ALONE).

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 36: Be Rubber, Not Glue

All through elementary, middle, and high school negative comments were commonplace as were the responses. First, it was "sticks and stones" then we graduated to "I am rubber, you are glue". Still the name calling continued. Heck, it probably continues to this day in some form or another in your life. Whether it is a co-worker calling you a name that you would not want your grandmother to hear or one politician calling another a cheater. It is all around us, in some cases it hurts and in the case of politicians it may be true.

There are some individuals that would get upset when they are called names. Then there are those that let the vicious words of others slide right off. How do they do it? How to they appear to go unscathed by the sharp tongues? They know, understand, and believe that they are NOT what others are claiming them to be. They know themselves enough to not fall for the trap that others are baiting them to fall into.

Those that shrug off the name calling know that those that are saying those words are FOOLS. They are behaving like little children who don't know any better. As an adult, why would you want to go against someone with a mindset of a 7 year old? Think about it, would you really react with anger when a 7 year old child calls you a name? Of course, you wouldn't. So why would you even entertain the thought of considering to go toe-to-toe against someone who chooses behave like a schoolyard bully by slinging such names around.

What if what they are calling you is true?

Simple: Say "Thank You for bringing that to my attention" and move on!

And YES, it is that simple. If you still don't believe me, then try it the next time someone calls you a very negative and very derogatory name. Remember, you are rubber and they are glue and you know the rest.

Thanks,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 35: To Forgive & The Mirror

I invite you to revisit the Day 29 post "Letting go of the past" before proceeding.

Every once in a while, I hear about how a person needs to be forgiven for past transgressions. Then the words that follow "I forgive you for whatever you did" are said and as if by magic all is well in the world. Well, when it comes to certain religions it works almost that way.

However, when it comes to dealing with human beings things are a little different. We are dealing with another human not a benevolent god and things can get a little dicey. What if the other person does not want to be forgiven? What if the other person is not prepared to forgive you?

WHAT THE ???? How can someone not be prepared to forgive you? You are ready to forgive them and how dare they not be ready? Who the heck fire do they think they are? Surely, you are the better person because you want to forgive first, how can they treat you this way?

Interesting but all too real. There is one thing that concerns me. I often wonder if those individuals ever stop to think and reflect on why the need to forgive even exists?  What happened that caused the need for someone to forgive someone else. I have always been taught that it takes two to Tango. No matter what it will always take 2. Thus, the need exists to reflect and realize that Individual #1 may be the root cause as to why the trouble occurred in the first place. Thus, accepting that trouble goes where you go may answer the question as to why you have to forgive so many others in the first place.

The next time you are in a position where you MUST forgive someone, STOP, take a long look in the mirror and see things from the other person's point of view. Who knows you might have to actually EAT ALL YOUR WORDS, SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE, OPEN YOUR EYES and APOLOGIZE!

Remember, apologizing is humbling and much better than thought of as being sanctimonious by declaring your need to forgive someone. Give it a try, will ya?

Thank you,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 34: Travel (for the sake of curiosity)

Pack your bags! Get out and hit the open skies or the dusty trail or the road that goes on forever. One of the most exciting and life-altering activity anyone can do is to travel. Whether it is to the shore, to the amusement park, to the next town over, to the next state, to the next country it doesn't matter so long as you step beyond your neck of the woods.

Plane, Train, Bus, Cab, Car, Bike, Rickshaw it doesn't really matter so long as you get out and about. Know that you might just find a new favorite place in the world. Heck, you might even move there. Who knows? You will but you do have to pack first (remember what mom said about clean underwear).

Imagine what your world view will be when you change your latitude, longitude, and altitude every once in a while.
Thank You,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 33: Call Someone (Anyone)

When was the last time your fingers did the walking across your phone's keypad and dialed an old friend? If you have to stop and think about it, then it has been way too long!!!

Unless you owe someone money there is absolutely nothing wrong with ringing up an old friend. They might just be surprised that you called or even remembered them for that matter.

If you do owe them money, dial them anyway. Who knows they might have forgotten about the money owed, especially if it has been a long while since you last talked.

Go ahead and re-connect, it's OK.

Thank You,
Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 32: Constantly Curious

By design all humans are curious creatures. Then again by default we are creatures of habit. If we like something we will keep doing it until it either makes insanely rich or extremely poor, there is very little middle ground here.

Because there is very little middle ground you have to create and maintain a constant curiosity of the world. Question EVERYTHING! Ask the questions others want to ask but are afraid to! Pull out your handy dandy journal and document EVERYTHING! Take names and numbers. Absorb everything the world has to offer. Try something NEW! Start a new adventure!

Remember, to you the world is uncharted territory and there be dragons there. So put your pith helmet on, grab your bull whip, strap on your sidearm and get out there. Dive into the pit of snakes head first. Walk where Angels fear to tread!!!

Experience the Experience. Feel the new sensation. Leave YOUR COMFORT ZONE behind!

There is only one planet we can explore, there is only one life to do it all, so get out there and do it!!!

Please drop me a post card every once in a while to let me know how you are doing and where you are!

Bon Voyage
-Dave
