MIDDAY NUGGET: Are You Doing it the Old Fashion Way and NOT USING SOCIAL MEDIA?

Are You Doing it the Old Fashion Way and NOT USING SOCIAL MEDIA?

The other day, there was a small business owner walking around passing out flyers. Very admirable. When he entered my office building, I asked him to sit down and talk a while about the . I asked him to show me his flyer. It was postcard size, front and back. It was loaded with images and information. It has a phone number on it but that’s all.

That’s all? What do you mean that's all?

Yes. It had no web address, no Facebook page address, and no twitter handle. Seriously!
I asked him where these three things were on his flyer. He said that he had a Facebook page but no webpage or twitter.

I pointed to the front door and showed him our company info. I told him this is 2014 and you have to have that information ready for anyone and everyone. Whether they become a customer/client or not they might know someone who needs or wants your service.

He just gave me this look of what is this guy talking about?

He then said something that just floored me, “I am doing this the old fashion way and I want to get my customers by word of mouth and by going out there to meet them.”

Excellent. That’s the right idea. A righteous idea. However, what happens after you leave?

Huh.

What happens when you leave the office and the person that you talked to does not want your service but has a cousin who is looking for it. Do you really think that flyer will stick around? NO! It offers that first point of contact nothing so it goes into the trash.

With no Facebook page, twitter address, or website to visit that piece of paper (flyer) becomes as valuable as a used Kleenex. COUNT ON IT!

He just refused to get it.

That’s alright. Sometimes, it takes people a couple of bats over the head before they get it. However, I feel that for this guy it may be too late before he gets it.

As with any business, there is plenty of competition out there. His business is not unique, his closest competitor is less than a quarter of a mile away, and it is located on major thoroughfare. It is actually on one of the most popular streets within a 100-mile radius. He has location, location, location going against him and I am more than certain there are plenty of other business owners that have that going against them, as well.

However, that’s when going ONLY old fashioned will not work. You, me, and everyone that wants to do business in 2014 has got to fully understand that it is the shotgun effect of using social media consistently and effectively that will get that much needed attention and that attention will turn into sales of your product or service.

If you absolutely have to go Old Fashioned, how about trying this: Go Old Fashion using the New Fashion Devices, Media & Apps.

Thank you,
David Guerra

MIDDAY NUGGET: TEACHERS, Any professional development over the summer?

Dear Teachers,

Can you believe Summer Vacation 2014 is quickly ending? Where has the time flown? It was just last week kids were flocking to South Padre Island or Daytona Beach or wherever they go for Spring Break. Now, television commercials are not so subtly reminding us of the back to school sales. Parents, are you ready?

Teachers, what about you? Are you ready?  Are you ready to start the new school year?

Aside from taking some much-needed Rest & Recuperation what have you done to prepare for the coming school year? I am not talking about putting up a new border on the bulletin boards or buying new dry-erase markers. I am talking about what have you done to enhance your profession, your future as a teacher!

That’s right I am talking about PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT!

What did you do over your summer break to enhance your future? To enhance our children's future?

Did you sign up and attend a webinar? Attend a seminar? or participate in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People course? Or did you read a book (or two or three)?

If the answer is NO, don’t fret you still have time.

It can be anything. It can be about anything. Just do something that might just change your perspective on your life, profession, or everything.

Who knows it may be something that will teach you, yes you, the Teacher some new approach to dealing with your students or dealing with their parents?

I understand that summer is your time to decompress from the last school year. However, it is also time to prepare for the upcoming school year. Yes, it really is. Unless you consider yourself a part time teacher and a part time beach bum, you have no excuse for not getting in a little professional development before the school year begins.

I know I can hear it now, “they don’t pay us enough to attending professional development training.”

I call SHENANIGANS on that statement.

They pay you enough to take at least two months off every year, don’t you think you could take a couple of those precious days off and learn something.

Remember, it does not have to be anything fancy or drawn out. Just do it.

Don't you deserve it? Don't your kids deserve it? I know my children deserve it.

Thank you for your time,
David Guerra

MIDDAY NUGGET: GROUPTHINK (Only You Can Prevent It)

Earlier this week, I was invited to visit a blog.  It is not a business blog, not a food blog but a mommy blog.

It is the local blog geared towards new mothers and mothers for young kids. The blog is really nice and loaded with plenty of real world examples of how to raise young children, be a mom, be a lady, be a crafty individual. However, there are a few things that disturb me about the blog and its contributors:

• None of them report having a child over 12 years of age. No Mom on staff that is a Mother of a Teenager?
• None of them appears to be a day over 29. No mother the same age or older than their mothers?
• None of have a child who left home only to come back. What?
• None of them report being the parent of a special needs child? Do Special Needs children NOT exist in their world?

Do you see where I am going with this?  I sure hope you do!

This blog and its contributors much like many organizations out there develop something worse than mediocrity.  They develop, foster, and encourage "Groupthink".

If you are not familiar with the term here is what Groupthink means: "practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility."

In the case of the blog, there are no outside individuals that bring more to the cornucopia that is already in place. No Older Moms. Empty-nesters, Mothers of Teenagers, and so on.

Organizations get so caught up in their own hype that they fail to look beyond the break room. They fail to recruit outsiders. Quite simply, they fail.

Do not let your organization fail!  Always think outside the box.  Always look outside the break room for ideas and suggestions.  Recruit the craziest and weirdest people you can find.  Whatever you do, do not fail!

It may be too late for this blog.  As it, looks like all the friends and family that are part of that blog are in it to stay.  They might believe that they are on to something but with an audience that is constantly reducing in size, (kids tend to get older); their readers will no longer see the value in what the blog is providing and will leave for someone else. Someone that can fill the changing and growing needs.

Just like an organization, that has believed its own hype for too long that if it does not do something now it will be too late. Change must happen now, otherwise it is time to turn out the lights and lock the doors.  Customers, much like readers, want to see a wider variety offered to them than just the same old, same old.

It is up to you to destroy Groupthink in its tracks!  Every organization has a little bit of it if not too much of it.  Only you can prevent Groupthink!

Thank you,
Dave Guerra
