ABCs of 2014: Always Be MENTORING

Today's ABCs of 2014 is: ALWAYS BE MENTORING. A for Always, B for Be, and C for Mentoring (the C is silent).

You must mentor people. You cannot avoid this. You cannot run from this. You cannot hide from it. You have to be a mentor. Find someone and mentor them. I am more than certain that in your place of  work you will find no problem finding someone to mentor and lead.

There can be nothing greater than taking someone under your wing and teaching them what you have learned. There is nothing greater than to take someone under your wing and listen to them. Really listen. Then Really Share!

Then when the time comes find someone else to mentor. Never Stop Learning, Never Stop Leading, Never Stop Teaching, Never Stop Mentoring

Thank you,
Dave Guerra

FINDING BALANCE AND LIVING LIFE | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (March 25, 2014)

Every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9pm EST, I participate in a Tweetchat with Consultant, Coach, Speaker, Founder of #LeadFromWithin, and Author of  "Thoughts Spoken From The Heart" Lolly Daskal.

The #LeadFromWithin Tweetchats are insightful, thought provoking, and generate genuine conversation. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Twitter members join the conversation every Tuesday night. You should join us and if you are already following the #LeadFromWithin tweetchats then you know.

Each week, it is a different topic. Over the course of the hour our host, Lolly Daskal, will post 10 questions related to the topic. Every question ends with the hashtag #LeadFromWithin.

Every tweetchat participant is encouraged to respond to each of the questions. The responses are UNIQUE, INSIGHTFUL, and INSPIRING!  You have to read them (well, as many as you can) as they go flying by on your Twitter feed.

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening for the tweetchat and throughout the week be on the lookout for the Twitter hashtag #LeadFromWithin

On the evening of Tuesday, March 25, 2014, the topic was “Finding Balance and Living Life”

Here are the Questions and my Answers. Enjoy!

Q1. What is does it mean FIND YOUR BALANCE: LIVE YOUR LIFE? #leadfromwithin
A1. It means that we can all achieve a better place in living our lives through achieving balance with everything we do (HARMONY) #LeadFromWithin
Comment: By finding harmony among and with everything we do we can achieve a better life.

-----

Q2. What are the warning signs you are out of balance? #leadfromwithin
A2. Behaving in a manner that has everyone asking “WHAT???” #LeadFromWithin
Comment: When your behavior has affected others around you to the point that they are questioning what is going or what happened to you then life is out of balance.

-----
Q3. How does fear play into balancing our lives? #leadfromwithin
A3. We need fear to help keep us from floating up too high and not paying attention to what matters most remaining grounded #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Fear is the great equalizer. Most people don't recognize that we need fear in our lives because they spend so much time trying to avoid it. They play it safe. Fear is like steam being release from the steam valve on a pressure cooker. Fear is an early warning system. Fear is there to remind us that we are human and that things can hurt us. However, there are plenty of people that would rather turn tail and run at the hint of fear. Use fear to your advantage always.

-----

Q4. What kind of small changes we can implement to recharge? #leadfromwithin
A4. To recharge we can disconnecting for as little as 15 minutes a day, every day. (Step away from all that causes imbalance) #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Stepping away from everything that is making life become unbalanced even if it is just 15 minutes will most certainly work to keep you balanced throughout the day. Taking longer breaks during the weekend helps recharge you and gets you ready to face the next work week.

-----
Q5. How can we tell if we are dedicated or addicted to work? #leadfromwithin
A5. If you cannot step away, especially when you must (i.e. family time) then you are an addict. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: It is that simple. If you catch yourself giving up those time that matter most for those that matter less then you are addicted. Plain and Simple you are an addict.

-----
Q6. How does knowing your values play into finding your balance in life? #leadfromwithin
A6. Your values are the road signs on the highway of life. They give you guidance, it is up to you to take the proper route #LeadFromWithin
Comment: This highway metaphor is a great example about finding your balance. We know what we have to do and all we have to do is do it. However, for most of us this is easier said than done.

-----
Q7. What are some vital tips for creating life balance? #leadfromwithin
A7. Recognize that life is a constant struggle to remain balanced. Be aware of that concept and you will achieve balance constantly #LeadFromWithin
Comment: When we must create life balance we have to know what is happening all around us. We have to see that 360 degree perspective in order to know what we have to do to get better.

-----
Q8. What two or three actions could you take right now that would create the most impact on your wellbeing? #leadfromwithin
A8. Make a date with yourself to spend quality alone time. Then a date with a loved one for some real one-on-one time #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Spending time yourself allows you to re-connect with yourself. Then spending time with someone you love adds quality to your life. When you both on consistent basis your well being will be greatly and positively impacted.

-----
Q9. In life can you have it all? If yes, how? If no! Why not? #leadfromwithin
A9. Yes, you can. If you are happy with yourself and happy with the world around you then you have it all! #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Yes, you can have it all. You can have it all without it costing you a fortune. It is all about perspective and attitude. If you can attribute happiness and success to anything other than money then you can have it all. See, when you have money sure it can buy you many things but you will be constantly be worried of losing all your money or never making more. Then are you truly happy? Be happy with yourself and be happy with the world that you live and you will have it all.

-----
Q10. In the bigger picture, how can you get what you want long term for yourself? #leadfromwithin
A10. Staying focused in the now, remembering the past is unchangeable, and tomorrow never comes, it’s always tomorrow #LeadFromWithin
Comment: There are three things to know when it comes to working towards the long term balance: Past, Present, Future. The past can not be changed. The future is undetermined. Today, the present, is all that matters. Just work on today and the rest will take care of itself.

-----
Look forward to have you join us next Tuesday.

Do you have what it takes?

Leaders give it! Managers demand it.   Do you give it? or do you demand it?

Giving respect is one of those leadership traits that had an almost immediate return on investment. By giving someone respect they will either give you respect back or give you nothing. It is almost faster than a video going viral, you will know.

Now just because someone chooses to not respect you is no reason for you to go off and not respect them. It could be they have never been treated with respect and they don't know any better. No matter what show them respect. Always!

pas • sion / Do you have what it takes?

Do you have what it takes?
Do you have the passion to lead? Do you have that uncontrollable emotion to your followers? to your organization? to yourself?

There is a fine line between Passionate  and Emotional. One is what you are before and up to the point you are doing something. The other is what happens afterwards. Now, while some emotion is good, getting overly emotional is NOT. However, you can be 100% passionate 100% of the time and that is perfectly acceptable.

Passion is essential to any business operation, to any leadership style. You must have that commitment and exude passion every day. The day you give 90% is the day you are giving 0%. Again, this is an all or nothing.

A little goes a long way. A lot is too much and so is none. A leader must learn to control their level of humility.

None is TERRIBLE! Displaying no humility gives off the sense of conceit. Being conceited is a great way to lose current followers and close the door on any future follower. Your reputation will precede you.

A lot  is HORRIFIC!  Displaying too much gives off a sense of lack of confidence and that is the fastest way to lose followers.

A little is EXCELLENT!

hon • es • ty / Do you have what it takes?

Do you have what it takes?

Do you consider yourself honest?  Do other people consider you an honest person?  Now, don't think about it just answer: yes or no.

It is that simple.  To be a leader you are expected to be honest.  Being a leader means that your middle name is "honesty".  The people that follow you, follow you because they see you as someone who has integrity, morality, and the ethics that they want in their lives.  By having those qualities they also expect a bit of honesty.  No, they expect a lot of honesty!

Sure there a lot of dishonest people out there and many of them have followers.  However, with those individuals their followers are either being deceived or they actually believe that a dishonest leader is what they want in their lives.

When it comes to being a dishonest leader the lifespan of such an individual is limited.  Limited in the sense that their actions will be discovered by others who were expecting honesty and are being deceived.  Once found out that dishonest leader is no more.

However, an honest leader will live forever.

You have no choice. YOU MUST BE GENUINE! You have to be.

You must be GENUINE 100% of the time.

Not 99.999% of the time but 100% of the time.

If you are not genuine that 0.001% of the time, it might as well be 100%.

Being genuine is black and white with no room for any shade of gray.

THE ART OF GIVING AND RECEIVING FEEDBACK | A Tuesday night with Lolly Daskal (March 18, 2014)

Every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9pm EST, I participate in a Tweetchat with Consultant, Coach, Speaker, Founder of #LeadFromWithin, and Author Lolly Daskal (Thoughts Spoken From The Heart).

The #LeadFromWithin Tweetchats are insightful, thought provoking, and generate genuine conversation. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Twitter members join the conversation every Tuesday night. You should join us.

Each week, it is a different topic. Our host, Lolly Daskal, over the course of the hour will post 10 questions related to the topic. Every questione ends with the hashtag #LeadFromWithin. Every participant is encouraged to respond to each of the 10 questions. The responses are UNIQUE, INSIGHTFUL, & INSPIRING!  You have to read them (well, as many as you can) as they go flying by on your Twitter feed.

I invite you to join us every Tuesday evening for the tweetchat and throughout the week be on the lookout for the Twitter hashtag #LeadFromWithin

On the evening of Tuesday, March 18, 2014, the topic was “The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback.”

Here are Lolly’s questions and my answers. Enjoy!

Q1 What is feedback? #leadfromwithin
A1. Feedback is dialogue from others designed to inspire us (our future self) #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: Feedback is primarily designed as a tool that helps us build up and make us better.  Feedback should be something that not only inspires us to be better people but when done right we help others become better.

-----
Q2: Feedback should be about………………? #leadfromwithin
A2. Feedback should be about the good, the bad, and the ugly. A full perspective otherwise why bother #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: Feedback should be given from a 360° perspective.  Feedback should never be one sided.  From the way we carry ourselves to the way we tie our shoes to the way we color in a coloring book.  Feedback must be all encompassing for it to be effective.

-----
Q3: What are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to feedback? #leadfromwithin
A3. Do be sincere & honest. Don’t be mean but Don’t pull any punches. #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: When it comes to feedback you have to be sincere when giving it just as you have to be sincere in accepting it.  If you want feedback then be prepared to hear the good and especially the bad.  The ugly will take care of itself.  You have to hear it or you have to give it but do not make an ass of yourself while doing it. Then it just doesn't work.

-----
Q4: How can we make feedback a gift? #leadfromwithin
A4. When feedback is accepted with authenticity and appreciation #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: Sure you can package it up all nice and neat and it will make somebody feel good almost as if you've just given them the greatest Christmas present of all.  That doesn't work!  What does work is being honest, authentic and appreciative of the fact that you had the honor to give someone feedback or had the honor to accept feedback from someone else.

-----
Q5: What are some mistakes when giving feedback? #leadfromwithin
A5. Giving feedback when not all that was observable was not observed (a.k.a not seeing the big picture) #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: When you only see half of the presentation or catch a story at the end or see just part of the big picture you are in no position to give honest and genuine feedback.  As you do not have all the necessary info to give a full 360° perspective from your point of view there really is no point in attempting to give feedback.

-----

Q6: What are some excuses for not giving feedback? #leadfromwithin
A6. Excuses for not giving feedback stem from fear of confrontation or possible confrontation thus fight/flight instead of communicating #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: Providing feedback is a form of confrontation and if you're afraid of confrontation, in any form, then providing feedback is not for you.  Don't attempt it, don't think about it, just put it out of your mind.  The confrontation does not need to be hostile.  You are confronting someone when you give them feedback because you're not only telling them what they did right but what they did wrong.  Providing feedback is definitely not something for the shy or timid.  Providing feedback takes courage because you don't know how the of the person's going to take it even if your intentions are good you still do not know how they're going to receive it.  However, when done right it is right.

-----
Q7: How can we become a better receiver of feedback? #leadfromwithin
A7. Continuously asking for feedback no matter how big or small we need to hear it. How else can we become better? #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: We need to constantly receive feedback. When it is not presented to us then we have to ask for it.Just like anything else that we want to master, we become better receiving feedback when we get it.  At first, we might not be so good at receiving feedback from others but over time we start to filter out and filter in those emotions and anxieties in order to properly process the feedback.

-----
Q8: When does feedback not work? #leadfromwithin
A8. Feedback does not work when all sides are having monologues and not authentic dialogue (it’s about communication) #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: It is that simple, if everyone is talking and no one is listening then how can anything be done?  How can feedback work?  In that environment, it does not work.  It can only work when there is true dialogue and absolutely no monologues.  There has to be two way communication for feedback to properly work!

-----
Q9: The best way to give UPWARD feedback is……….? #leadfromwithin
A9. Best way to give upward feedback is to give EXCELLENT downward feedback. Your reputation will precede you! #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: Giving excellent feedback to your subordinates and peers will make it that much easier to give feedback to those up the line. Not being afraid to give effective, excellent feedback will help when it comes time to give feedback to superiors.

-----
Q10: Why is feedback important? #leadfromwithin
A10. Feedback is important 'cause for some people that it is all they can do to help make you a better person a better leader #LeadFromWithin
COMMENT: If someone can offer you no other support other than pure, honest feedback then you are a very lucky individual.

Are you? You better be.

It is that focus that will help you see problems before they actually become problems. Staying focused will also help you overcome adversity by showing you that the light at the end of the tunnel is really there. Stay focused also helps ensure that everyone understands the mission and vision of the organization.

To a caring leader, staying focused on the morale, health and welfare of his staff will create and sustain a strong bond. That bond is created because both sides care. Isn't that the point?

Do you engage with others? Do you make it so? (For those that know pun intended)

Are you a leader that seeks others in order to communicate and connect?

Or are you the type of manager that sees engagement as another form of dictating? Is your definition of engaging others mean you tell them what to do and they do it?

Seriously, if that is your definition then something is wrong. Something is not working. That something has to be corrected immediately.

You have to engage with others. There is no substitute you have to be genuine when engaging. No short-changing that responsibility please. Making a solid connection with those you supervise and those you lead will only make you a stronger leader.

Engage!

Are you fearless? Do you have any fear? You should have fear. You should not be completely fearless. You should however, be fearless when you must be fearless.

Fear is a good thing. How is it a good thing? It is a good thing because it helps to keep you grounded. It helps you determine what your limits are and what they are not.

Think about this: If you have no concept of what fear is then how will you know that base jumping without a parachute is not a good idea.

I know, a little over the top but I do hope you know where I am going with this.

I say be fearless and take that leap but know that when you land you will land on solid ground so be prepared for the impact. Take that risk! Take that chance!

em • pow • er / Do you have what it takes?

Do you have what it takes?
Do you empower others? Do you give them what they need to become leaders? When you empower others you are making them leaders. They will in turn empower others and make them leaders.

Now what you empower them with is subjective. So be careful what you empower others with. Give them the good stuff. Keep them honest and humble. Never, ever let them use what you give them for bad.

They may be tempted to but when you only empower them to do good, they will do good. Give them a chance, an opportunity, and you will see what that will get you.

Not sure, how to do it?

It is real simple: Start of small and over time start increasing the amount of authority you give. Before you know it they will be part of the trusted inner circle (and that's a good thing.)

Your duty to yourself and your continued success as a leader should always be at the top of your list. Think about it, if you do not have that sense of duty to yourself then how can you possibly fulfill any sense of duty to others? Seriously, it is that simple.

Dedication is one thing that is a core function of being a leader. Leadership in essence is Dedication. You dedicate yourself to your business, your facility, your equipment, and above all you dedicate yourself to the people that follow you.

That dedication makes you their follower. They in turn, lead you. Yes, you follow them just like they follow you. It is the only true perpetual motion machine.

If you don't follow your followers how can you expect them to follow you? Give them the dedication they deserve and they will dedicate themselves to you, your mission, and your vision of success.

A3: It is important because it teaches us to know when to run and when to stand and fight. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: We have to know when to give up on something that cannot yet be overcome. We must know when to fall back, regroup and try again. It teaches us not to be like the moth to the light.

Q4: What allows resilient people to cope with life’s inevitable stresses, hardships and losses? #leadfromwithin
A4: The ability to understand that stresses, hardships, and losses are part of life just as happiness & success is, as well. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Resilient people are those that can bend and weave at the drop of a hat. They are the ones that can turn on a dime. That is what allows them to cope.

Q5: Why are ethics an important factor in building resilience? #leadfromwithin
A5: Ethics keep you on course so you don’t compromise yourself when travelling through charted but dangerous waters.  #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Many say Ethics are what keep any leader grounded. I say they are correct. Ethics are what brought them to the level of a recognized leader and it is what will sustain and guide them to the next level.

Q6: We equate resiliency with mental toughness, but what are the physical benefits of being resilient? #leadfromwithin
A6. We are more aware of and in harmony with our surroundings. Thus, we are more agile and flexible. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Physical benefits of being agile and flexible means that stress does not take over which in itself is bad on the body. Stress wreaks havoc on blood pressure, hormones, and other components of the physical body, which in turn is bad for the body as a whole. Being resilient helps in minimizing the effects of stress.

Q7: If fear can thwart our ability to be resilient, what are some ways to conquer it? #leadfromwithin
A7. Roleplay, walkthroughs, visualization, and of course, actually doing it will all help conquer that what causes the fear #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Practice, Practice, Practice. Yes, through practice you build confidence. It is with confidence that you conquer fear.

Q8. What strategies can we use to change the way we view and respond to a failure? #leadfromwithin
A8 Don’t let failure consume your present. It is done and nothing can change that. Know that you still control your future thus failure becomes moot #LeadFromWithin
Comment: There are countless strategies out there. There are many ways to respond to failure. As for me and what works, I subscribe to the belief that fear cannot consume you. When fear consumes you then you freeze and when you freeze, life passes you by. When life passes you by, then you have failed. Know you cannot change the past but tomorrow is up for grabs then you can harness that fear and use it to be a success.

Q9: To build resiliency and thrive in changing times we have to_________?
A9 Stay flexible and accept that failure is part of the process that takes us to success. #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Remaining flexible from beginning to end is the one thing that every successful individual needs. Resiliency is a great motivator as nothing can ever really stand in your way.
-----

Q10. How can we build a more resilient, less vulnerable self? #leadfromwithin
A10. Be more Open, Flexible, even more Accepting + Can Do Attitude and resiliency will increase as self-vulnerability decreases #LeadFromWithin
Comment: Keeping your options open and focused on accomplishing what you set out to do can be successfully completed. So long, as you keep the focus on the positive everything will be A-OK!
