100 Days, 100 Ways Day 20: Walk The Talk

A lot of people "talk the talk". A lot of people make some noises that come from the side of their neck. Yet, others manage to "walk the walk" but do so aimlessly. They meander through life with a chip on their shoulder and really truly believe that they fully understand why the chip is there or where they are going.

While there is nothing wrong with a little self-confidence when it comes to "walking the walk" but if it is all style and no substance then why bother.

If you can talk the talk and walk the walk then why can't you Walk the Talk? It is truly unfortunately, there are so very few actually WALK THE TALK! By this I mean that it sure is one thing to say something and do something but are you DOING what you are Saying? Are you doing as you say? In simpler terms are you leading by example? or are you nothing but filler? hot air? all fluff?

Pick one thing you TRULY believe in and stick to it. Make it your mantra. Make it the one objective in your life that all other considerations bend and weave towards. Then and ONLY then are you WALKING THE TALK.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

Thank You

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 19: Always Give Thanks

Though there is nothing like it in the world when people go out of their way to thank you. There is no greater feeling than the one we get in our gut when people recognize us for what we do for them and who does not like feeling good?

Now ask yourself when was the last time you gave someone Thanks?
      A. Five minutes ago
      B. Yesterday
      C. Two days ago
      D. Last month
      E. Give someone thanks? Hell no! I am the only one who deserves Thanks!

Seriously, if you answered anything, and I DO MEAN ANYTHING, other than letter A then you are WRONG and you are OVERDUE in giving someone a simple: THANK YOU!

What's it going to cost you to take some time and recognize all the good people and all the good things in your everyday life? Remember, no action, no event, no one is too big or too small to be left unrecognized.

Set aside some time everyday to either bang out a Thank You phone call or a Thank You email. Better still, do what I do at least once a week, write a Thank You note to someone who you feel has gone above and beyond for the week? Then repeat at least once a week. Before you know it you will be saying some very meaningful Thank You's to those that you never even thought deserved a second glance.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

Thank You!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 18: Bring Some Sunlight Into Your Life

They say that if you want the best Vitamin D in the world you have to make it yourself. 10 minutes a day out in the sunlight is enough to make that Vitamin D happen naturally. It seems that all mammals can synthesize Vitamin D from cholesterol when sun exposure is adequate, thus called the "sunshine vitamin". It does wonders for your bones, it helps prevent rickets. However, I am not solely talking about the health benefits of walking out in the sunlight.

As we start approaching winter and the days get shorter and the nights get longer (which happens to be my favorite time of year) it is even more important to step outside and get re-vitalized, re-energized. The Sun as if by magic can transform you into a new person. It's true! Ever remember just one time, when you were a kid, that you were not happy being outside in the sun, playing and running? You felt more alive then than most people do now.

You can feel the warmth of the Sun bring new life and new hope, plus the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D into your body. So get out there and enjoy those rays, your bones will appreciate it.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 17: Start Blogging

If you are not already blogging, start now. Blogging is a great way of getting your message out there. Tell the world what you are passionate about. Tell the world that you got something to say and that you are going to say it.

Think you can't do it? Don't know what a blog really is? You are reading a blog right not. I have a message, no no I have plenty of messages. I have a lot to say so I am saying it. Sometimes it might not be popular, it might not be what people want to read and worse still, it might be something directly about the reader and yet their vanity does not allow them to know it is about them (and people like them). However, having a blog also means you have a great responsibility.

I have a great responsibility when it comes to sharing information and talking about "friends" and "associates" and "family" while I do not name names I do draw from everyday life to cite real world examples about what is right and what is wrong in the world at-large. If you think you don't think have something to say, just take a step back, look around you, and you might just be astonished at just how much there is to say.

Who knows you might just start a discussion that you never thought you would be a part of, let alone create. Along the way you might just meet some new and interesting people.

Not sure where to go to start a blog. You start right here at BLOGGER.com or head on over to WORDPRESS.com to get your very own blog up and running. Please let me know your new blog's web address as I would like to read what you have to say.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 16: Take More Pictures

If you are not capturing moments in time, you should start. If you are taking pictures, keep up the good work.

Get yourself a dedicated camera (film or digital) and start clicking away. Do not be tempted to use your cellphone camera. While it will do in a pinch, it is not a camera. It is a phone that happens to have a camera built-in.Go ahead and get yourself a camera and start taking pictures. Take pictures of family, friends, plants, bugs, anything and everything. Just take pictures of events or solo shots it does not matter just start capturing moments.

If you need a reason to capture those moments forever. Think about it like this, taking pictures is a great way to see life in a different way. It forces you to fine tune, fine focus your vision to a little box of the world. Once you see that the world is unique with every shot you take, the better person and a better photographer you will become.

Still not sure what to take a picture of try this (or something like this): A couple of years ago, I took one photo of the day's sunrise. I did this everyday for a year, even if I took no other picture that day, I took it. It was a lot of fun and I became a better photographer for it. I also shared those daily images with my friends and family, that kind of fun was priceless.

Not sure what kind of camera you want/need. That's OK with the quality of the cameras that are out on the market today you should have no problem finding one you can afford and use. There are plenty of great cameras out there for a reasonable price. Check out Amazon.com for some camera ideas.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 15: Have the Right Tool for the Right Job (Part 1)

You've been around long enough to know that you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. The same thing applies to anything and everything you do in life. You use the right tool for the right job. In this case, the right tool is a tool you wear just about everyday. Your Shoes!

That's right, your shoes. Are you wearing the right shoe for the right job? An uncomfortable shoe will be one of the first things you feel at the beginning of the day and the last thing you feel at night. An uncomfortable pair of shoes will do nothing but drag you and your attitude down. So why suffer all day long with a bad pair of shoes? Why make other suffer right along with you? Eventually, your frustration with those shoes will come shining through.

I understand the illogical logic that sometimes a bad pair of shoes just look good and to look good you need to suffer a little bit. If you absolutely positively have to wear an ill-fitting pair of shoes limit your time in them.

What I am saying is if you look good and FEEL good looking good then by all means keep on keeping on. However, when you don't FEEL good then by all means go out and get yourself the right tool.

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 14: Make Others Feel Special

Everyone likes the VIP treatment. Everyone likes to be treated special. So why not pay it forward and make someone feel special. Why not make them feel like the VIP you want to be. Making someone feel special does not require hordes of paparazzi nor does it require expensive, lavish gifts (though it wouldn't hurt). All it takes treat others the way you want to be treated: lots of kindness, plenty of sympathy, piles of empathy, and two helping hands. This goes a long way especially, when it is done WITHOUT any expectation of the same being return.

If you really expect something in return then guess what? You are doing it wrong.

Be Genuine. Be Authentic. Be The Person You Have Always Wanted To Be.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 12: Memorize Something

You remember cramming an entire semester's worth of Political Science into one all-nighter the night before finals? or when you crammed all the traffic signs and rules just before you took your driver's license test. It was great when you passed but when you didn't, well that's a different story. Now you don't have to cram. However, it is good to memorize something, especially as we get older. There is a general theory about maintaining good brain function into your old age and that's to memorize at least one new thing every day. It helps to keep your memory sharp, your mind operating in top form, and you able to recall almost anything. Give it a shot, it doesn't and you might just learn something.

If you are not sure what to memorize, why not start off simple and small then work your way up to epic poems or quotes by notable philosophers, dignitaries, and a good joke or two. Still not sure how simple to start? OK, let me give you one suggestion; The Periodic Table of Elements.

Yep, memorize all 118 elements, their symbol, and what the symbol stands for, especially if the element and the symbol do not share any letters. Of course, I am not saying you should do all 118 in one day but do one a day. Start with H and end with Uuo and you are set for the next 118 days. It will be a lot of fun, my favorite is: Plumbum.

Get to memorizing.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 10: Get Out There

The world may be your oyster, however, very few of us have an oyster bed in our backyard. That means that in order to get those oysters you are going to have to get out and interact with the world. I promise you no one is going to ring your doorbell and hand you riches of the world and the secrets of the universe. REALITY CHECK: It is not going to happen (not in million years). Now you can sit there continuing to believe that the man or woman of your dreams will be standing in your doorway the next time the doorbell rings, or a completely random and unexpected check for two million dollars will be in tomorrow's mail. It is not going to happen.

All of this is possible and can only happen when you decide to leave your safe zone and get out there and face the world. Face it head on, meet new and interesting people. Do new and exciting things. Then who knows your Ryan Gosling or Scarlett Johansson might just be standing at your front door ready to hand you a check for untold riches.

Until that moment comes you have to do everything in your power to make it happen and you can do that be getting out there.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 9: Go Take A Walk

They say that walking at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes each time will do your mind and body so much good. I have to agree. I feel so much better physically, when I am out on the road every morning. Mentally, I feel sharper being out there exposed to the last of the night as it starts to become day. There in the midst of a new day, your vision changes to see all the natural light that is known as the "magic hour" to photographers and cinematographers. Things all around look wonderful. This dance of light, colors, and shade help clear your mind because everything is as it seems. There is nothing hidden by shadows or direct light in your eyes.

So get out there for at least 30 minutes (in the morning preferably). Walk, Jog, or Run...whatever you choose...but get moving.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 8: Be An Early Riser!

You've heard that old saying that goes "The early bird gets the worm."  That really is no better quote that pushes the need to be an early riser. After a restful night's sleep your mind is ready to go. You are at your sharpest. So why not use that to your advantage?

Get up a little early (oh heck, go all the way and wake up an hour early). Remember, during that time your adversary or competitor may be listening intently to the talking head's on TV to catch on the latest, overnight celebrity gossip, you are working diligently to set a positive tone for your entire day.

To get the worm (the positive tone for the day) do what works for you!

Write, Draw, Color, Paint, Read, or whatever makes you feel good. Take about 60 minutes and dedicate the entire time to that one activity and do it every day. Once you have made it a habit, you will wonder how you lived so long without doing this simple yet, life altering, activity.

A dose of reality: I know that I feel terrible on those days that I do not do my 1 hour of dedicated me time. It has become part of my day and I am now at a point that I feel lost when I don't take just a few minutes, let alone the whole hour.  Give it a try and you might never go back to living without doing it.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 7: Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

Every day we have to do the things we don't want to do because there is something about the task that irritates us. This irritation can as simple as a mosquito buzzing around or the lawn mower next door or some jerk driving like a maniac. Remember, there are some things that are just NOT worth it. Swat the mosquito, remember the yard next door is only so big, and just pull over at the next convenience store and take a break.

You don't have to put up with the attitude that dealing with small stuff will give you. You control how you feel. Feel better knowing that you don't have to be irritated by the small stuff and once you start believing and living that fact the big stuff won't be as bad.

Did you know that when you smile your brain releases a very power drug into your system? That drug is actually a hormone known as Serotonin. Serotonin has long been thought to be a major contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness in a human being.  There ya go free happy drug that your body makes itself and self-administers all because of a smile.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 5: Start A Conversation With Someone New

We have all seen YouTube videos of people falling off the sidewalk, into fountains, down stairs because their phones have all their attention. We have become a society that would rather interact with strangers on the small screen rather than look someone in the eye and say "Hello!" We are continued to ignore the real world and live in the virtual world.

Of course, everyone is suspect of everyone else. The media and those Lifetime Movies of the Week have certainly changed the way we physically interact with other human beings. If Lifetime had it their way, ALL strangers are out to either steal our money, our spouses, our children or our very own lives. Don't get me started on what the media has done to us.

Put that aside and the next time you are at the Coffee Shop, in line at Target, at the Bookstore, or anywhere that you might be or heck even right now. Look to the first person you see and start a conversation. Who knows you might just end up making a new friend and maybe change the way you feel about the real world by giving up just a little of the virtual world.

Hello, My Name is Dave Guerra. How Are You?

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 4: Think Positive!

For those that have been negative thinkers this is probably one of the most difficult things to change. With a little practice, it should not be an issue.

Now don't be fooled and I am not going to fool you...Negative Thinkers are a dime a dozen. I can look at my email contact list or my cell phone contact list and find at least two negative thinkers with the first few scrolls of the screen. I don't surround myself solely with Negative Thinkers but they do creep into our lives because we need them and they need us: typically professionally but we also get them socially.

Don't despair, negativity is essential to living. It keeps us grounded and helps us to not live with our head in the clouds. However, making negativity the only motivation in your life is not healthy. It is not good for your Blood Pressure as the stress of negativity will contribute to increasing it. It is not good for your weight as the only comfort you get is immediate when good tasting food becomes the only thing you feel you have control over that is good. Rest assured your ever increasing weight will start making you feel bad.

So how to make the change from negative to neutral or positive?
First recognize that you have to have negativity in your life. Know that it does NOT have to consume you. Know that you can control it and that you can change the negative to positive (or at least to a neutral stance). Once you recognize that the negative is starting to creep in to your life, nip it! Nip it in the bud! In the bud, I say!

Seriously, if you want to be know for something other than being a "Negative Nelly" then it is time to change your thinking. It won't be easy but it can be done and who knows, you might just end up surprising a few people.

Thanks,
-Dave Guerra

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 3: Get Plenty of Sleep

In Day 2, I talked about the need to eat a good breakfast especially after the body has not had any nourishment for the time you were asleep which ideally is 8 hours. However, who has time for full 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep?

Not very many of us can sleep, even if we wanted to, for 8 hours straight. My sleep time is closer to 7 hours and I know there are others that are less and others are more. That's all well and good, however, what about those that get less especially when they know they need more? Imagine having an unhappy and unproductive life because you are constantly tired and sleepy and you know exactly why. Can you really succeed in life, love, and work if all you really want to do is rest?

I Just Have Too Many Things To Do Before I Can Go To Sleep?
Really? Did you really just say that to yourself? Do you really expect others to believe you? ALL OF US have the same 24 hours EVERY DAY! You, Me, The President, The Queen of England, Bill Gates, Your Next Door Neighbor, My Next Door Neighbor...ALL OF US!! Yet, some of us manage to either get it done or put it off until tomorrow morning. You have to make certain to put your duties aside (or at least get coverage) and get some sleep....some real sleep

Of course, it is VERY SIMPLE to say "Get a good night's sleep" but folks that is the only way. You have got to dig down deep and turn Letterman off after tonight's Top 10 and get some sleep because 6 o'clock comes mighty fast if you fall asleep at 2.

What about the weekend?
Trust me on this, banking your sleep for the weekend is a VERY SAD mistake many people make. You cannot sleep four hours a night during the work week and expect to have your sleep quota refilled on Saturday and Sunday only to have it drained come Monday night. That type of Yo-Yo sleep habit does more harm than good. Sure, it's a temporary fix but in the long run, it will have you right back where you were when you started out.

The ONLY permanent solution is to breakdown and GET YOUR REQUIRED hours of sleep. It may take a couple of weeks to find what your required hours of sleep are but once you find them you will be a much happier, more productive, and well rested individual.

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 2: The Importance of Eating Breakfast

Tony the Tiger® has been telling us, for many years, that eating a well balanced and nourishing breakfast is GRREEEAAATTTT! I agree 100%

However, who has time to prepare and eat a full balanced meal? Heck, I was happy if I could down my second cup of coffee before I had to hit the road. I know I was not alone in this. My business partner has this unwritten rule of NO BREAKFAST (not even a cup of coffee) YIKES!!!

Seriously, I have recently taken up with eating breakfast on a regular basis. If you plan your meal just right there is nothing that will cause you to gain weight or make you feel sluggish. If anything finding YOUR right menu will not only energize you but it will start you down the RIGHT path to weight loss as you will be eating three squares a day and NOT stuffing your face at the Chinese buffet come lunch time to make up for skipped morning meal.

Eat Breakfast Every Morning!
As I wrote, Breakfast will also recharge your energy reserves that were deplete over the 8 hours or so of sleeping. Restore the spent vitamins and minerals that your body used and still needs throughout the day. It will also help you feel not as hungry when you walk past the buffet line.

Seriously, get up just a few minutes early, make yourself a simple breakfast. I'm not talking a full English breakfast consisting of bacon, poached or fried eggs, fried or grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms, toast with butter, sausages and baked beans, usually served with a mug of tea. Save the full English breakfast for the weekend or the next time you find yourself at the Spindle Lodge in Leicester, U.K. (tell them Dave sent you!)

If you are stuck as to what to make/eat I recommend plenty of protein and plenty of liquids (water, coffee, tea). Give that a try. (Did you notice I made NO mention of starches (no toast, no hash browns)? You'll get those later in the day. Besides why would you want to mess with the work your body has done all night long?

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

Cheerio!

100 Days, 100 Ways Day 1: Keep A Journal

If you know me, then you know that I am a History buff. Having played a role in Cold War History, I know the importance of the keeping a journal (a diary). There are numerous reasons people have for keeping a journal maybe just as many reasons that people have for reading other people's journals/diaries. One reason, I firmly believe is to experience the past the way others lived it. Personally, I cherish the notes, letters, and writings that I created when I was living in Berlin during the mid-1980s. While the notes themselves are NOT great literary works of art they are priceless nonetheless.

I bet that most people that know me do not know that I have kept some form of a journal since 1985. I have never been 100% faithful to the entry part of keeping a journal but I have been faithful to having a place to write down names, events, exchanges, notes, and what not. For the most part, when I did write I wrote about what struck me as noteworthy on that day. I know some people would be surprised at the level of detail that some of those entries contain. Then again, there are some entries that are quick and to the point such as "September 18, 1986: walked to Andrews with Farrell and picked up two doner kebabs" (it was a Thursday by the way)

So why keep a journal?
There is an old quote from Spanish Philosopher, Essayist, Poet and Novelist: George Santayana in his book "Vol. I, Reason in Common Sense" that answers this question. "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Besides in a hundred days from now you can reflect on what you have learned about me or better still what you learned about yourself over the course of these 100 Days, 100 Ways series of blogposts.

Is it difficult to keep a journal?

At first, it appears to be a daunting task but once you get into it you can  you can have a good time capturing moments. 2012 compared to 1985 there are more tools available to you than I had then. Now all of us have almost instant (24/7) access to blogs, video, audio recording options on our smart phones and of course, we still have pen and paper (my journal weapons of choice).

The only difficult part  is getting started. Thus the challenge has been made, find your weapons of choice and get started journal-ling! Start recording your place in history.

Thank you!

Day 0: 100 Days, 100 Ways of Better Living & even Better Thinking

I am going to try something (I tried it something like this before). Others have tried it and others will try it, so why not me? Here is my plan:

Over the next 100 days I will post one new post a day on what I see as those things that are Important to improving our way of living and thinking. Of course, there are some great people, books, manuscripts, and graphics that have posted before for me. That's OK but remember none of them are me. I am me and I have something to say because this I believe and know.

Whether you agree or not with what I have to say or present, at your own risk, I invite you to join me for the next 100 days (even though I say today is Day 0 it is also Day 1 and the first posting is coming a little later today).

I do invite you to join the conversation and tell me what you think about any of the postings so far.

About So-Called "Social Media Experts"

This is one of those blog posts that I have been meaning to post but don't. As a matter of fact, I started writing the bulk of this several months ago but for some reason or another I just can't bring myself to complete. That is until now.

Until today, when I received a phone call at my place of business from a "social media expert" and it seems that according to this guy that because he has been using Twitter and Facebook since they came online he is the "social media expert" in my area. I played along and asked if he was a "certified" social media expert and he said he was. I asked where he got his certification? His response was the "Center for Social Media" at a local community college (FYI: to protect the innocent I altered the name of the organization he named as the provider of the alleged "certification").

I know for a fact, the organization he mentioned has NO such certification program. The closest program is a Certificate in "Marketing" under their Business Administration program and that certification offers ONE (1) class that has the word marketing in the title: "Principles of Marketing" (I am suspect of the entire certification program, as well). Moving on...

I told him "no thank you" and proceeded to hang up. He was insistent, to the bitter end of the call, that he was the ONLY expert in the area.

*CLICK*

Unfortunately, I know he will find some sucker to take his money. I say sucker because it does NOT take a lot to make Social Media work for you and your organization and most business owners I know are NOT in the habit of throwing money away.

However, there are those that will throw money away because they don't know any better. Throwing money in the direction of self-professed "experts" is like asking your next door neighbor to remove your appendix because he just happens to be a Licensed Vocational Nurse (I am not knocking the LVN profession because they know that ONLY Medical Doctors (Surgeons) are the ONLY ones who can perform surgery, no matter what Hawkeye and Col. Potter told Fr. Mulcahy over the radio on M*A*S*H).

As for the "gentleman" that telephoned offering his "expert" services, I know I can do a better job than that nitwit. Heck, anyone with half a brain and a conscience can do a better job.

Let me make certain that you know and understand this about me: I am by no means claiming to be a "Social Media Expert"

Though:
• I have been on Facebook since January 19, 2007 (5+ years ago)
• I have been on Twitter since March 26, 2007 (5+ years ago)
• I have been on YouTube since November 1, 2009 (3 years ago)
• I have been Blogging since November 25, 2005 (7 years ago)
• I have been paid professionally as a computer technician and network analyst since 1992 (20 years ago)
• I had and tinkered with my first computer when I was 14 (30+ years ago)
• I wrote my first computer program (in BASIC) when I was 15 (30 years ago)

Does any of that make me an expert? NO!!!

I repeat: I AM NOT AN EXPERT (especially not a Social Media Expert). Now, don't me me wrong, what I do know I know very well and I am constantly learning. After a Bachelor's in Business Administration and a Master's in Business Administration you could say I still have a lot to learn. Thus I classify myself as a Lifelong Learner.

So why do I not call myself an expert, especially a social media expert? Because in the grand scheme of ALL THINGS, Social Media is 10 minutes old. As the entire Social Media landscape is CONSTANTLY and CONSISTENTLY changing, so for anyone to call themselves a SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERT because they play with the toys is like calling myself BERING SEA CRAB FISHERMAN because I watch DEADLIEST CATCH.

Now let me tell you the one thing that all those so-called self-proclaimed Social Media Experts do NOT want you to know. That's right I am going to give you the SECRET to SOCIAL MEDIA? Those SME's (Social Media Experts) will charge you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for the following two words that may or may not work for you. Here it is: BE CONSISTENT!

Plain and simple: Be Consistent. Be consistent when it comes to putting content out on all the social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Blog, Spreecast, etc., etc.) you can. If having so many channels to choose from seems overwhelming then pick a couple and use them until you are ready to add more.

Please, do not pay anyone for the advice I just gave you for FREE!!! If some "social media expert" comes knocking on your door or calls you on the phone or drops you an unsolicited email please tell him or her, "No, Thank You!"

Tell him that you are onto his tricks and you will not pay one invoice for service, support and advice that you can get for FREE and be just as, if not better, successful!

Then again, I know there are people that will not hear my words of warning then in that case please submit your $500 PayPal payment to dave@daveguerra.com

Seriously, my prices are reasonable and that's why I am giving the secret away for FREE!

UPDATE: I should make the following addition:  There are some VERY GOOD Social Media Professionals out there. I know this because I have sought them out. That means I went looking for them and they NEVER (not once) claimed they were Social Media Experts and that they were the only game in town. Quite on the contrary, they have actually referred me to other Social Media Professionals when the need to further specialize arose. I highly doubt the cold caller would have had the professional courtesy to refer me to someone else if the need arose.

August 13, 1961 / The Berlin Wall

Today is August 13, 2012. 51 years ago today, construction began on the Berlin Wall. It was a scar that divided one of the Greatest Cities on the planet. After plenty of heartache, pain, and suffering the Berlin Wall eventually fell on November 9, 1989.

I can honestly say and attest, that while I was serving with the US Army, as a member of the Army of Occupation of Berlin, it was such a great honor to be one of the Defenders of Berlin's Freedom along with my fellow US soldiers, British and French counterparts.

The role that I played in World History can never be taken away from me and those that served before me, with me, and after me.

We did all the right things to ensure that there was a West Berlin that those that were oppressed, under the communist regime of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, had as a shining example of what Freedom was and is to turn to and inspire to make that wall fall.

Today is definitely not a day to celebrate but a day to remember all the Bad and all the Good that came to symbolize the Berlin Wall.

Stars Earn Stripes? Seriously? Are You Kidding Me? Really?

Did anyone see or hear about that new show on NBC? It is called "Stars Earn Stripes". Apparently, some "celebrities' are out to prove that the military has nothing on them. it seems that these "celebrities" can do what Special Operations Personnel can do anytime, anyplace. I'm sorry, I find it extremely difficult to believe that the concept the producers are trying to sell the American public truly "pays homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and our first-responder services."

I fear that this show will do nothing than to make a mockery of the EACH and EVERY VETERAN and ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY PERSONNEL.

Why do I believe this? These "celebrities" are playing a GAME. At the end of the competition, the "celebrities" get to go home alive without so much as a scratch. They get First Class accommodations before and after the show and if they don't feel like playing, then they don't have to cut their beauty sleep short.

Personally, if they want to be taken seriously and do something meaningful, EACH and EVERYONE of these "celebrities" should either visit a Recruiter, Sign on the dotted line, Raise their Right Hand and Walk Their (unscripted) Talk or if a military career does not fall into their "five year plan" then they should at least donate, without hesitation and reservation, the ENTIRE paycheck they are making for participating in this "show" to the USO, the Wounded Warrior Project, or any other Veteran Charitable Organization.

R.I.P. Stephen R. Covey

Today, the world, whether it knows it or not, lost one of the greatest thinkers, teachers, mentors, and the most human human being; Stephen R. Covey. If you have heard of him and knew of him then you are familiar with the book that the world for many people all over the world.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.

Changed my world in 1997. In the spring of 1997, I spent 5 days taking the 7 Habits program (yes, it was a five day program back then). At first, I was a little skeptical as to what the program was all about and wondered why my supervisor, who happened to be the Regional Director for a State of Texas Agency, recommended that I attend the course. I was not about to argue with the Regional Director so hesitantly, I sat down and opened the workbook.

By the end of Day One, I was starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. By the end of the course, I did not want it to end. I got it. 100% I got exactly what Stephen Covey was selling. I now had the tools to shape and redefine my post US Army Infantryman life.

If you have not had a chance to experience the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People then I recommend that you get yourself a copy of the book in paperback, audio CD, or the DVD. With either you can't go wrong. A word of warning, once you start you cannot stop because in order for the habits to work, to work effectively you must commit to them. This is not an easy task but it can be done. You will be tested every step of the way but if you are really ready for change then I say GO FOR IT!!! Don't worry you will stumble and you will fall.

Since 1997, I have stumbled and fallen numerous times but I have picked myself back up and remain secure with the knowledge that I, again, will "begin with the end in mind" (Habit 2 of 7).

I have since left the public sector and work hard on Habit 1:  "Be Proactive" everyday because that's what Dr. Stephen R. Covey expects all of us.

Thank You Dr. Covey for all that you have done for me and for everyone that ever read your book, saw your videos and listened to your words. You will be missed but your Legacy will Live On!

Rest In Peace, Stephen R. Covey.
